Called for estimate on getting shift cable and throttle cable replaced on my boat… smithville marine quoted me 350 and they this company quoted 400 and as soon as I told them smithville marine was beating them by 50$ I get hung up on lol

Won't ever use them again. I waited 7 weeks to get it in. What a waste of time. All I wanted was a tune up. They called the next day and told me it was time to go motor shopping that my motor was shot. No low end pressure they said. Offered to sell me a used motor installed for $4,000.00 and that included my motor on a trade in. Who wouldn't take that stupid offer? I got the boat back with the plugs laying in the bottom of the pan in water and the plug wires dangling loose with nothing in the plug holes. I took it to a real mechanic, he ran a pressure test & got 150# of pressure on both the upper & lower which is excellent for that motor. He put the plugs back in it, ran some cleaner through it, made some minor timing adjustments, took it out on the lake & it runs absolutely great. These guys are about as dishonest as it gets, they thought they saw me coming.

Steve, I am very sorry to hear how upset you are. Had you called us to discuss this, we could have easily explained the difference between what your other technician tested and what we tested.
You see, all motors that come into us are checked for BOTH compression and leakdown.

The compression on your older 1982 motor was fine at 145/150 as shown on our service ticket. This is what your other mechanic found as well. The pictures you posted agree with what we found. There was no dishonesty whatsoever.

The trouble comes in at your leakdown test. It came back at 35% top and 15% bottom. This tells us that your cylinders are not up to specs and will fail soon. A leakdown test is a far more conclusive test over the compression test and is the industry standard to determine the health of a motor. A quick Google search will tell you that “5% or less leakage indicates an engine in excellent condition. Up to 15% leakage means an engine in acceptable condition. Anything above 15% would be an indication that an overhaul is needed.”

So here is the problem, if we ignore the leakdown test and charge you to do a tune-up on your motor then your motor blows up, you will blame us for not properly testing and performing work on a motor that we know will have big trouble very soon.

I am glad to hear that your motor is running good for now. We truly have no intention of ripping you off or being dishonest. We have been in business for 40 years and work hard to keep our customers out on the water. As I stated before, the dishonest thing would have been to perform work on a motor with bad leakdown.

I ordered a part on their website that was listed for $6.71. I get a phone call the next business day saying that the part is no longer manufactured and that they want to charge me $25 plus shipping for it even though they have it in stock. No thanks. I will never shop here again.
