Had an incident of sudden pain in our dog. Went to vet, got all the info the insurance would need to reimburse. No diagnoses from vet yet as they ordered a CT scan since they didn't know exactly what was going on and where the pain was coming from. AKC denied the claim saying it was due to IVDD which is an ILLNESS not an Accident! Not sure how they can diagnose MY dog, and IVDD is NOT an illness. She has never had any kind of back or neck issues before and she is 11 years old. If it is determined to be IVDD that is 100% an accident, since IVDD is due to AN ACCIDENT THAT INJURES THE SPINE!! So we have been paying for nearly 2 years, for NOTHING. AND so far with the CT scan and all visits are out over $1600 SO FAR! ZERO stars if that was a choice.

All good until your pet gets sick and then everything is pre-existing and not covered. They even deny the testing claims that determine the condition! Would never sign up for this pet insurance company again! Total racket!

My 12 week old puppy had seizers and was hospitalized. My claim is being held up because a diagnose can't be made. She weighs 3 pounds and had lung issues in the hospital. I have followed every demand they have made and jumped through every hoop but they are still not processing my claim! It is unreasonable and to put my puppy through an MRI to see IF we can get a diagnoses. I was advised not to do an MRI by the neurologist. I get claim rules but sometimes they are not attainable. It has been 2 months. Totally disappointed in AKC!!!!

I received one month free insurance with registration of my new puppy. Before the policy lapsed I continued coverage and added to it (genetic coverage). My 16 week old puppy was playing in the yard on 3/29. My 130 lb GP stepped on him. He cried and began limping. I took him to my vet when they opened on the 31st. Xrays looked fine. Vet said soft tissue injury. We received a anti-inflammatory shot and went home. The claim was coded as soft tissue injury. The puppy was better in two days. Two weeks later has jumped of the bed and reinjured it. We went back to the vet. This time the vet said the x ray might be concerning and offered to refer me to a specialist to see if he needed any repair. This visit shows closed with no coverage. When I saw the specialist she wanted to check the hip under anesthesia. She also wanted labs. The entire visit was denied due to preexisting genetic condition on 3/31 before the genetic portion was added on 4/11 even though the 3/31 visit was coded appropriately as a soft tissue injury. He was eventually examined under anesthesia and a JPS procedure was done to prevent the development of hip dysplasia in the future. It has all be listed as preexisting on the 3/31 (soft tissue visit). When I called to inquire about how a soft tissue injury from my 130 lb dog stepping on him was genetic they told me I would have to file an appeal because that was their determination. The policy is a complete rip off. Don't waste your money!

I agree with all of the one star reviews. This dishonorable, so called "pet insurance company" will use any excuse to avoid paying a claim. My 13month old German Shepherd puppy started limping on his right leg so I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia. I submitted a claim and was told that was a hereditary condition and not covered because I did not have hereditary coverage, ok, that was understandable. That limp went away in two weeks. Then when he was 17 months old he ran into me, hard, while we were playing and yelped and started limping on his left leg. When the limp did not go away after 3 weeks I took him to the vet. After x-rays the vet said it was probably a sprain or strain and prescribed Carprofen. After 4 days the limp stopped and I stopped the Carprofen 5 days later. I submitted a claim to this phony insurance company and they denied it because he had elbow dysplasia, a condition that had absolutely nothing to do with the injury. Needless to say I cancelled them. Save yourself some grief and find a reputable company.

This pet insurance is completely useless and total garbage. They will find any way possible to not accept any claim you submit. I highly recommend to NOT use them for pet insurance.

Horrible customer service. I had prepaid for 3 vet visits for our dog. We had to use one of them for a sick visit. The charge for the entire visit was $72. Our vet deducted the $60 I had previously paid and charged me the balance of $12. The insurance has paid for the $12 (after the co insurance) but refuses to pay the $60. They contend this was a "reward" from our vet, states we did not pay this amount & therefore they will not reimburse me. I have explained the $60 was a prepayment (I actually paid for this in advance) the vet has written this on the invoice (I sent to them) & they still won't pay. They said they are waiting for something from our vet (despite me already providing this to them) yet our vet states it was not clear from their voicemail what else they needed. She returned their call & left a voice mail days ago & hasn't heard back.

Amazing insurance, considering it's pets and not humans, and lightning fast reimbursement. Our little Pom Zizi had a choking accident and was basically half-dead when we got to the ER (Access Emergency Hospital, see separate review). With animals, it's not like humans - the ER is not obligated to treat, regardless of ability to pay - they actually ask for payment upfront. And in this case, we were talking breathing tubes, oxygen chambers, and if that didn't work - put her on a ventilator, to the tune of $12,000 every 24 hours. We were shocked, but knew that AKC Pet Insurance would come through - because we had a 80-20 policy, although with a $12,500 limit annually (we changed that now to "Unlimited," for literally $8 more per month.) The total bill at the ER came to 5 grand, but we had to pay $6,500 upfront, and were then refunded $1,500. Our doggie was in the ER for 2 days, where they did everything, and then finally scoped and cleared her esophagus. After that, she got tracheitis, and we took her to a regular vet (Scott Amsel, amazing guy at Kanan Veterinary, see separate review). She was put on steroids, antibiotics, cough medicine, and in one week, she was back to her old, regular self. That bill "only" came to $111 - such a deal. And guess what - AKC covered everything as planned - in ONE WEEK. We got 2 checks, one for $3,800something, and another for $106. No questions asked, just two checks in the mail! I called and had a super nice conversation with Chelsea, a rep, who patiently explained all those details about upping to unlimited, also the fact that they only cover one "foreign body" incident, one "dog fight," and one "toxic exposure" incident in the pet's life. Also, if you sign up your pet after age 9, only accidents are covered, whereas if you have kept your insurance, the pet gets grandfathered and is covered for both accidents and illnesses for the remainder of life. Even if you're a smartypants who reads the fine print, it's not enough. Call them, and have an in depth convo with their customer service reps. They are the nicest and will explain everything in great detail - if you ask. We have two dogs and we love them - and they love each other. Thank you AKC for always being there. Highly recommended!

Was told that your insurance gets activated 5 days after it begins. I goto the vet on the fifth day ( after confirming with a customer care rep who has confirmed that I can go on the fifth day as it begins that day) with hope that my insurance is activated and yet they deny my claim with reason D6.Claiming my policy wasnt in effect. D6 Treatment or diagnostics of an incident that occurs during the specified policy/endorsment waiting period. So inshort they'll look for any excuse to deny a claimDont waste your money on this POS insurance. I'm leaving for PetsbestUPDATE: Literally the second time, they denied me another claim reimbursement under the pretext of hiding under another of their clauses. D10 Veterinary exams, unless you have purchased coverage through our Veterinary Exam endorsement. -LIke we willl cover the condtion if youve purchased a Vet exam add on, which insurance is where VET exams coverage needs to be purchased as an add on? THEY WILL LOOK FOR LITERALLY ANY REASON TO DENY A CLAIM. FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE RESPECTIVE NY STATE DEPARTMENTS NOW

I did reserve him and got this policy the day before we picked up our puppy. 2 weeks later he got parvo and the bill was $10k. We didn't know if we would be able to pay. Within days of submission, we received approval a d the direct deposit. We have had a lot of insurance companies with our previous dog. A lot. They were all terrible. So far so good. Get the policy early and add everything now. You can always remove later. We are so grateful we did.

My 2.5 year old dog required a stool analysis to determine the cause of a diarrhea outbreak. I submitted the claim and it was denied due to the diagnosis of isosproa. This is a parasite that normally puppies get, and adult dogs throw off. Apparently, my dog had a weakened immune system due to an ear infection the month earlier, and also the stress of being a kennel daycare with a lot of other dogs for over 2 weeks, (while retaining walls were being constructed in our fenced back yard). I was shocked to discover that this vet invoice was not applied to the deductible. I was told that the decision of payment/deductible application is ultimately based on the diagnosis, and that his diagnosis of a parasite was not covered. I pay for the "Exam Plus" option on my policy. It is deceptive that diagnostic tests to find out the cause of a sudden illness are not covered. The diagnosis testing should be covered, or this information should be spelled out in large block letters on the policy. I would have looked elsewhere if I had known that taking my dog to the vet to find out what was causing a particular illness is not covered. I can understand them stating that actual treatment for a non covered illness is excluded, but to say that initial testing to find out what is wrong is not covered, wow! Isn't that the point of having per insurance, being able to take your dog to the vet to find out what is wrong?!

Do not even think of wasting your money on buying pet insurance from AKC Pet Insurance. THEY DON'T PAY CLAIMS! Absolutely the worst policy declarations ever! An emergency vet exam is not paid unless you buy an EXTRA policy. WTH!Although their customer service reps are very nice and helpful, there is no way these policies help pay for a vet expense. Considering what they exclude, the deducible, the percentage they pay out of the claim and the max benefit amount per claim, you will completely waste your money!Trust me, do the math. It's NOT WORTH IT AT ALL! Save your money for a rare occasion you may have to have an emergency. Keep it in your account! Don't hand it over to this insurance company.

Thieves who do not pay claims owed. I purchased an annual policy for my 9 week old puppy on 2/10/21 to go into effect on 2/11/21 to 2/11/22 to include: companion care, exam plus, hereditary plus, defender, alternative plus. They were giving away one month free companion care which I did not want or ask for. My payment on 2/10/21 was $96.49 because of the free one month of companion care. Each month thereafter I paid $104.54. There is a 30 day waiting period for the hereditary and defender coverage. My puppy went for his 16 week shots on 3/13/21 and the vet noticed he was developing an underbite. Long story short, it's a hereditary issue and he needed dental surgery to the tune of $4354.50. They have denied my claim saying that the policy really didn't go into effect until 3/11/21-02/11/22- that would be an 11 mos policy not a 12 mos policy. They have denied my claim in violation of my State's law. I have a second puppy that I pay $90/mos for insurance - I pay close to $200/mos for my puppies but they don't cover claims that are clearly covered. If anyone else has been screwed over my this company, please reach out

We got our first dog and fell into the trap of getting AKC pet insurance instead of a more reputable brand. Our puppy had a severe illness a couple of months later, and not a single cent was reimbursed by the insurance plan - which was above and beyond the basic coverage at about $80/month. So, not only did we have expensive vet bills, but we just flushed nearly $500 down the drain for this “insurance plan.” Our vet clinic couldn’t believe the claims were denied. I am only writing this review to save others from the frustration and financial burden.

I was a customer for 9 and a half years.Always had problems with my claims.Just want to let you know that my rates were up to $350.00 a month for ONE-DOG.And then my vet wrote The (A)-word.I think you know This is what you get this in your bones. Don't write it you will get DENIED.Sad my dog has been with them for 9 and a half years.Since she was a puppy. And they Jacked me up to $350.00 a month..And Denied my claim. Just wanted to leave a review for people PLEASE don't get blind sided. Also my Vet had said that my DOG NEEDED A MRI to be sure that was the problem could be sore From coming down on leg the wrong way.I'm contacting the BBB and filling a report.$350.00 a month is more than I pay every Two weeks for my family health plan. And then l find out that when she was 2 years old that they were two inform me about a Rider attached to POLICY and no one informed me of any riders attached to my policy.

My family and I decided to bring a new little puppy into our family at the end of 2020. When we got him he came with a 30day trial for pet insurance (different company). I never had pet insurance on past pets and I went back and forth on if I should have pet insurance on our new puppy. I started doing research on different pet insurance companies and came across AKC Pet Insurance. I went ahead and bit the bullet and committed to purchasing a policy with AKC. Best decision I have ever made, they have been a lifesaver for me! A few months after purchasing a policy with AKC our new little puppy started having some issues. We took him to vet multiple times, vet ran several different blood test with no firm result and then eventually sent us to a specialist for more testing. I have submitted 4 different claims to AKC and they have processed and covered each claim within days of submission. They have taken away the financial stress of going through these issues with our baby. I highly recommend AKC Pet Insurance to anyone and if you are on the fence about having pet insurance at all, I say go for it. You may not need it, and that is great if you don't, but if you do, you will be grateful you have it. Thank you AKC!!

We got our beautiful golden retriever puppy in December 2020. In march 2021 - he accidentally swallowed an object and had to have surgery to remove it. We had signed up for AKC insurance and made sure that emergencies were covered. Little did we know they only cover up to $500 per incident (after deductible plus only %80 reimbursement so were getting like 300 bucks back) with absolutely NO option of changing that coverage online. There is ABSOLUTELY NO OPTION for changing the "per incident coverage" online and we had no idea. So we are now stuck with a $6500 dog surely bill with no coverage when we thought we had emergency coverage. We spoke to the AKC on the phone and were told that we COULD NOT CHANGE the per incident coverage online - and that there was NO WAY TO KNOW THAT. What a horrible experience and a poorly designed (perhaps on purpose?) website. So we have now cancelled this misleading and worthless pet insurance. We were misled. The AKC should be embarrassed and ashamed to have their name on this misleading company - and pet owners should run far away when offered this worthless coverage. Go somewhere else - anywhere else for coverage!!!
