Homefix were fast, polite and professional. Booking co-ordinator Poppy understood my plumbing requirements, gave me a good quote, ensured I fully understood any possible additional costs, and sent an expert plumber to do the job. Thak you Poppy!
£816 for around 3 hours of drainage work — Avoid at All Costs Before booking, we were told by phone that the pricing was £100 + VAT for the first hour and £50 for each additional 30 minutes. We have a recording of that conversation.
We then paid a £120 attendance charge. Once the engineer was on site, the problem was described as complicated, and the written quotation referred to specialist machinery, CCTV and further investigation. We were then quoted a further £696.
In reality, the whole job took around three hours, no CCTV was used, and the wider investigation described in the quotation was not required. The blockage was cleared using mechanical drain-clearing equipment.
Total paid: £816.
We complained immediately on the same day and asked for a breakdown of the charge and justification of the price.
They replied once, six days later, saying they were investigating and would respond within seven days.
After that: silence.
We chased repeatedly. NO RESPONSE AT ALL.
What concerns us most is the contrast between how responsive they were before payment and how completely they stopped engaging once the pricing was challenged. The way they exaggerated the issues and added a lot of uncertainty around the problems that supposedly needed to be resolved put us under pressure to proceed, allowing them to charge much higher costs. In our view, this is pure manipulation of customers and is unethical.

We are sorry to hear you feel this way and particularly concerned by your comments regarding communication following your complaint.
Our initial attendance charge covers the engineer attending and assessing the problem. Where specialist drainage equipment is required a fixed price is quoted before proceeding. This reflects the equipment used, complexity of the work and our 12 month workmanship guarantee rather than simply the time spent on site. Should the work take longer there is no additional labour charge.
We do however take your concerns regarding the quotation and lack of follow up seriously and would welcome the opportunity to review everything with you. Please contact support@0800homefix.com so we can investigate this properly.

Boiler repair
The boiler repair was quick and efficient with the engineer arrived within 3 hours and completed with an hour. The price was quite high unfortunately but needs must.

Chaotic, unsafe and deeply unprofessional from start to finish. Avoid.
What should have been a straightforward bathroom renovation became months of stress due to poor management and substandard workmanship. The project manager admitted he could not keep track of jobs, forgot what I had requested, and gave me only 24 hours to choose everything at B&Q. An agency builder they hired caused leaks, damaged parts of my home, covered walls and carpets in black grout, and made me feel unsafe following a shouting match with another builder inside my property.
I was pressured for payment before the work was complete, blamed for their mistakes, and promised cleaners and compensation, which did not materalise. Parts of the bathroom ultimately had to be completely redone and areas of my house repaired. I believed the matter had finally been resolved.
Unfortunately, only 4 months after completion, further defects have now appeared including bubbling and cracking paint, staining, poor finishing, loose fittings and continuing signs of poor workmanship.
I have raised these issues directly with the company and through Checkatrade, but they are failing to provide a meaningful response. I am now having to escalate the matter through Citizens Advice and Trading Standards.
This has been an unacceptable experience throughout, and I would strongly caution others before using this company.
Edit: In response to the company's reply below, the photos are not misleading. The first five show the state of the works completed by 0800 Homefix before it had to be ripped out and redone from scratch. The remainder of the photos detail what the paintwork looks like 4 months on from completion. It's now been 8 months, the paintwork is cracking further, and I also now have water leaking from the shower through the ceiling down into my hallway and i am now having to shower at the gym in fear that it gets even worse (see the last photo) - the very issue they were meant to fix in the first place!! 0800 Homefix are refusing to fix anything until I take down this review but I refuse. This is in clear contradiction to their obligations outlined in their own terms and conditions. I am now having to pursue other formal escalation procedures to resolve this situation once and for all. This is what 27k gets you!
Further update: 6 months on from first reporting the defects and receiving no response from either emails or calls, I have had no choice but to raise a Section 75 AMEX claim against them. They have finally acknowledged me, and are now saying that they will not fix anything until I close the claim against them, at the detriment of me forgoing my consumer rights and protections.

Hi Aimee, we are sorry to read your comments. We do not accept a number of the claims made in this review and we have photo and video evidence of the completed works on file. We would also like to clarify that the pictures you have made public are work-in-progress images taken before the final completion of the job and therefore do not reflect the finished result. We also have records of the remedial works carried out and of our ongoing communication regarding the matters raised. As this case involves a detailed history and conflicting accounts, it would not be appropriate to address every point publicly. We remain willing to review any current concerns through the proper channels and respond directly with reference to the evidence available.
Very disappointing service from start to finish. 1 star is too generous.
I paid for an engineer to investigate an issue with our shower. The engineer arrived, turned the shower on and off, and then simply told me that the shower needed to be replaced. There was no further investigation or attempt to identify the actual cause of the problem.
I was initially told that replacing the shower would cost approximately £600. The following day, this increased to £1,100.
I had made them aware from the outset that there was a young baby in the property, so I booked the replacement immediately and was given an appointment for two days after the initial visit. The day before the appointment, I was contacted and told that they had been unable to source the required part. Eventually, the part was supposedly found and the appointment was rearranged for five days after the original visit.
I called the engineer the evening before to confirm the appointment. He told me that we would be the first job of the day and that he would arrive at 10am. Then, at 9:45am the following morning — just 15 minutes before he was supposedly due to arrive and despite travelling from Essex — I received a call saying that the part had been stolen and they could no longer complete the job.
Given the circumstances, the repeated delays and the fact that we had a young child in the property, I had no choice but to find another, more reliable company.
They did refund the deposit for the shower that was never replaced, but refused to refund the original investigation/diagnostic visit. Given that the diagnosis was ultimately incorrect and the proposed replacement would not have resolved the underlying problem, I find this extremely disappointing.
In fact, the company I subsequently used identified that replacing the shower would not have fixed the problem. It would also have involved breaking tiles to gain access, meaning we could have been left with unnecessary damage to the bathroom as well as a problem that still had not been resolved.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re genuinely sorry for the inconvenience and frustration caused, particularly knowing you had a young baby at home. The delays and last minute cancellation are not the level of service we aim to provide and we completely understand your disappointment.
Your deposit for the replacement was refunded in full. The initial attendance charge covered the engineer attending and assessing the reported fault which is why this was not refunded.
Regarding the diagnosis, our engineer made a recommendation based on the findings available during the visit. We cannot comment on another company’s subsequent diagnosis without reviewing their findings, however we take your concerns seriously and will review the original assessment internally.
We’re sorry that on this occasion we were unable to provide the smooth and reliable service we expect from ourselves.

Scam artist plumbers who use manipulation tactics. If you want someone trusted and professional in your home who won’t rob you blind with false claims about simple jobs - avoid this company. I’ve reported them to trading standards.
Update: in regards to their reply below, none of the prices are explained properly, if they did I would receive a detailed invoice with price breakdown. I was told on the phone £144 would include first hour of labour, then the plumber at my home claimed that price was only for diagnosing the problem and was not included in the final price?? I hired them for one clear job, and the plumber then made claims about their being extra problems which he couldn’t leave without fixing - not the case for both - I debated with him for a while because he claims seemed unlikely and over exaggerated, but he became agitated and I felt worried about his attitude in my home if I refused the work, and thought maybe I should believe him. I then only got a verbal price quote, despite asking him twice for one, including an official one from the office - this quote did not include VAT(illegal) and then the price went up at payment which I was pressured to pay before they left my property. If they’re serious about denying these allegations, they would send over this detailed invoice proving the costs, plus explanation for the work I didn’t originally request and apologise for the plumbers behaviour. I believe Aimee’s review below completely.

We take allegations of this nature extremely seriously and completely reject any suggestion that 0800 homefix scams or manipulates customers. Our charges are explained before attendance and where additional work is required the price is provided before proceeding with no obligation to accept. We also stand behind our work with a 12 month guarantee and £5m public liability insurance. You are of course entitled to raise concerns with Trading Standards and we will fully cooperate with any enquiries. We remain happy to review your individual concerns directly.
Sam the gas engineer was very helpful and got to the route of the problem quickly. We also received a very quick quote for the additional works. As is the case with many of these callout firms, the quote was a little too high for us at first glance. We had the luxury of time, as it was not an emergency, so we are now getting cheaper quotes from local engineers.

They said to me that they'll book me in for Saturday and assured me that there will be no cancellations and they needed to take payment up front to make sure that we commit. The next morning they tell me they don't have an engineer because they need someone more skilled for this, despite the fact that I was very detailed in my checker trade advertising. They were just a complete waste of my time ironically doing the same thing that they are accusing other companies of not doing so well.
I am waiting for my refund - and thankfully I found someone that Saturday to deal with my install.

Dear Customer
We're sorry to read about your experience and understand how frustrating this must have been.
We always aim to honour our appointments wherever possible. However there are occasions where after reviewing the information provided we determine that a job requires a specialist engineer to ensure the work is completed safely and to the standard our customers expect. While we appreciate this caused disappointment our intention was never to waste your time but to avoid sending an engineer who may not have been the appropriate person for the job.
We're pleased to hear you were able to find someone to complete the installation that day. We can also confirm that a full refund has now been issued and we hope this has been received.
We apologise again for the inconvenience caused and wish you all the best with your new installation.

If it were possible to leave 0 stars I would do so. I urge customers not to use this company, and to identify an alternative service that will be transparent about their pricing and adhere to their own terms and conditions advertised.
This company advertises a charge of £120 for the first hour of work and says that any additional work required will be given a fixed price quote and billed in 30 minute increments. I booked a straight forward job, only needing a basin tap to be replaced as well as an isolation valve under the kitchen sink. At the time of booking the job, I asked whether both things could be completed at the same visit to avoid having to pay an additional call out charge which they agreed to.
The engineer arrived 1.5 hours outside of the scheduled time, however this is not the main issue. The main issue is the way in which I have been charged and the customer service that has followed.
The work was completed within 1 hour, therefore I was expecting to only pay a small additional charge of the parts that I had not supplied - how wrong was I about this. I was charged an additional £138 on top of the £120 already paid, bringing the total figure to £258 for 1 hour of work. I queried this at the time as seemed far too high and was told that the charge related to parts and labour work under the kitchen sink to change the isolation valve. I queried this as the job had taken 1 hour, and I had paid for 1 hour of labour however was continuously told this is what the charge related to. As a lone female at home with a newborn baby I paid the charge as I did not want to get into a dispute in my own home with a male I did not know, however as soon as the tradesman left I called customer services to query what I had been charged for and why.
The first member of staff I spoke with advised that she could not see any notes on the system as to what had been charged for and said she would query this as there should be an invoice on the system detailing this. I called back later and was told that the first staff member should not have said this as the charges applied are up to the discretion of the engineer and invoices are not provided (despite their own website saying that they should be).
I have made a formal complaint and their “final position” after investigating is that I have been charged correctly and that the work under the sink was deemed to be outside the scope of the original request (despite me booking for the work to be completed beforehand?!) and they have alluded to the fact that the work had to be completed quickly as I told the engineer I had to leave to do the school run therefore suggesting that there is some kind of premium that needs to be paid for working quickly, however in another email have said that the work was done quickly because it was a straight forward job.
I have advised that the only reason I mentioned needing to leave is because the engineer was late and if the work was expected to take long I would need to make alternative arrangements for collection.
At this juncture, they have still failed to provide me with an invoice detailing how much was paid for parts, and how much for labour relating to the work under the sink. The company does not adhere to their own terms and conditions displayed on their website and seem to make up charges when and where they can. It is ridiculous that despite asking for an invoice on several occasions, they are either unwilling or unable to provide one.
I have now had to make a subject access request for all data to be provided so that I can take this complaint further and provide all the necessary information to trading standards.

Dear Teá Lisa
We're sorry to read that you remain unhappy with the outcome of your complaint.
Our pricing structure is dynamic based on both rolling huorly work and fixed price quotations. In your case you was offered a fixed price from. site. Once an engineer has assessed the work they may identify additional items that fall outside the original scope of the booking. Any additional work is quoted before it is carried out and the customer has the choice to accept or decline. A fixed price means the cost remains the same whether the work takes 20 minutes or several hours and equally if the job overruns there is no additional labour charge.
While we appreciate you feel the work should have been covered within the initial charge our investigation found that the additional work undertaken required a separate fixed price quotation which was accepted before completion.
As a company we provide a same day service supported by a large team of engineers a 24 hour 365 days a year customer support team £5 million public liability insurance and a 12 month guarantee on our workmanship. While we understand we may not always be the lowest priced option our charges reflect the level of service protection and support we provide.
We are sorry that we have been unable to reach an outcome that meets your expectations. Your concerns have been fully reviewed through our complaints process and if you require any further assistance with your data request or any outstanding queries please contact (support@0800homefix.com) whereby a manager will be happy to assist.

Had a leak from underground. Sadly it was over 24 hours later before the job could be started having arrived first time with not enough time to do it straightaway. It wasn't cheap but Sam was friendly and kept me informed throughout the search and repair. Unfortunately I now need to employ someone to make good the driveway but otherwise the job is done. It took around 45hours in all from the initial phone call.

Used them before and they were fine but this time they missed two promised time slots - had to keep calling to find out when plumber would arrive. Communication was poor throughout. Plumber was fine and helpful but a quote for further work came in at at over £500 to fit a £20 part. It would only take about an hour. Very overpriced.

Hello David,
Thank you for your honest feedback. We’re sorry that your experience on this occasion fell short of the standard you’ve previously received from us, particularly regarding the missed appointment slots and communication. We’ll certainly take your comments on board.
We’re pleased to hear that the plumber was helpful, although we appreciate your concerns regarding the quotation. Our pricing reflects the wider costs of providing a rapid-response service, including our engineers, vehicles, 24/7 support, insurance and guarantees, rather than simply the cost of the individual part and time on site.
We understand that our prices can be higher than those of smaller independent companies, but we aim to provide a reliable, professional service backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee and £5m public liability insurance.

THIRD PARTY SCAMMERS AVOID !
Middleman company who subcontracts work to struggling (or just generally bad) tradesmen and inflates the real cost of the parts+labour by approx 300%. You’ll be asked to prepay a £120 fee over the phone for call-out and “1 hour of work” the catch is, the plumber won’t do any work, will just just mill around your property touching things like he owns the place. When you see the shockingly high quote to actually complete the job they will attempt to harass you into either accepting the quote or paying the £120 (if you didn’t already) for the 10 minutes attendance. Even the template emails they send are deceptive and scammy. Definitely don’t prepay over the phone and DON’T SIGN ANYTHING if a plumber attends. Booked by my partner in a hurry but thankfully I know better. Get them out of your property as fast as you can.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear you were unhappy with your experience, however we strongly disagree with the suggestion that we are a scam or that our engineers attend properties without carrying out any work.
Our £120 attendance fee covers the engineer’s attendance, assessment and allocated time on site. If the issue can be resolved within the allocated hour and no additional materials are required, there is no additional charge. Where further work or parts are required, we provide a separate quotation, with absolutely no obligation to proceed.
We also dispute the claim of a 300% markup on parts. We use reputable, high street trade merchants who provide guarantees and assurances on the quality and authenticity of the parts supplied. We do not rely on unknown online suppliers where there may be concerns over whether parts are genuine, their quality, warranty or the ability to return them.
We provide a rapid-response service supported by multiple engineers, vehicles and a 24/7, 365-day back office. This infrastructure, along with £5m public liability insurance and our 12-month workmanship guarantee, means our pricing may differ from smaller independent tradespeople.
We’re sorry you felt the service did not represent good value, but we take all feedback seriously and would be happy to review the specific circumstances if you email our support team on support@0800homefix.com
