Pros:
• He needed a "hard reset" (his words)
• He was safe
• He did get SOME of his HS education
Cons:
• The academic plan presented to parents was not adhered to.
• He was trained to behave as a prisoner.
• Parents were threatened that their student would be kicked out & the parents must keep $$ in WRA's coffers in case they kicked him out & needed to transport him to the nearest bus depot or airport.
• The biggest con was the insurance fraud.
Before WRA would file with our health insurance, we had to sign (and have notarized) that any amounts paid by health insurance would be given to WRA. Nevermind that we paid the WRA tuition in full every month.
The kicker was that WRA was billing health insurance TWENTY TIMES (or more) the amount of our monthly tuition. That's insurance fraud no matter how you slice it.
When we received the insurance checks, we refused to deposit them & write a check to WRA. They directed us to the contract we'd signed. We reminded them we paid our tuition in full each month & had a zero balance. We were given a sob story about how expensive it is to run WRA. We contacted our health insurance admin & told them we would not be cashing these checks. We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars.
He was there 13 months & the insurance checks were hundreds of thousands. That's how severely they were overbilling our insurance.
Because the insurance checks were payable to us (not to WRA) and WRA wanted the insurance money....
When insurance eventually recognized the fraud & wanted the $$$ back, they'd want it from us, not WRA.
Teaching young men to be responsible adults with character and integrity --- while majorly defrauding insurance --- while holding financial consequences over the parents' heads --- that simply does not compute.
Yes, we removed our son before he completed the program. In the year he was there, there were only three who completed the program, so I have no idea how they arrive at their program graduation percentage.
Did he gain from the program? Certainly.
Did he need a "hard reset"? Absolutely.
Was he kept physically safe? Yes.
Were academic schedules adhered to? No.
Was our health insurance defrauded? Yes.
If you're considering WRA, you're in a time of deep need. Try your best to keep your eyes open, even in a period of desperation.
Tough experience, lasting impact
I graduated from WRA after three years, and I was NOT in any way a model student. It was not something I wanted, but I definitely needed it, and I faced it head-on. Less than four stars for how it is now, but five for my experience.
It was incredibly challenging at first, but rewarding later on. The structure and transitions I experienced while at WRA—from the older program (community compliance) to the newer one (landing adaptive mastery)—forced me to grow in ways that didn’t always feel great at the time but were ultimately worthwhile, and my growth was always in a positive direction. I made meaningful connections with staff and peers, and I still miss some aspects, like Ms. Rose's amazing food (nothing compares!).
However, nowadays it appears that the program has its impact as it seems students are more comfortable now.
Overall, a tough yet transformative experience. My graduation speech did not do it justice. I needed a lot more time to actually reflect on my journey and appreciate it for what it was.

If you want real help for your loved one, this is the place. The staff is loving and kind, yet have boundaries as well. They have a wonderful school with fantastic teachers who take the time to help them through their studies. Their therapist are top notch who can treat any kind of addiction and behavioral problems. I’d recommend this place over and over again.

Thank you for sharing this, Kellie. We’re grateful for your trust and your kind words about the team, educators, and clinical staff. Providing a supportive environment with clear structure and compassionate care is central to the work being done. We truly appreciate your recommendation and are glad your loved one received meaningful support.
I am a survivor of WRA and have a message for all parents considering this program:
I was tortured at this facility around a decade ago and want to emphasize that it your goal is to permanently ruin the relationship you have with your child then send them here. I have seen first hand what they do to kids here and it's insane they're still open. I went into Google to see if they're shut down yet and was astonished. Not only did I watch managers attack students, I have seen attempted suicides, seen my peers forced to eat their own vomit, we were starved by staff, staff fired for having relationships with students, staff so drunk they pass out while "watching us", they're paid for the labor they force us to perform, and ignore heath issues until they become significant enough for it to be borderline emergent. If youre looking for a literal concentration camp to send your kids to, you've found it.
As a community partner, I’ve witnessed the compassion that begins at intake and carries through every interaction at White River Academy. They take the time to understand the root of each child’s struggles, meeting them with patience and dignity. Their trauma-informed care lifts kids up in ways that help them heal, believe in themselves again, and feel safe for the first time in a long time. A team of real people, dealing with real societal issues in a real way

Thank you for sharing this. We really appreciate your perspective as a community partner. The team at White River Academy works hard to meet each student with patience, dignity, and trauma-informed care, so it means a lot to hear that reflected in your experience. Supporting kids in a way that helps them feel safe and rebuild confidence is at the heart of what we do. Thanks again for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review.
WRA provided the structure and the care that our son needed to function in a family. WRA staff built connections with our son and were responsive to our questions throughout his time there. We are particularly grateful for the patient and effective work of our son’s therapist. At times, the logistical support for the final steps in program completion was less than we would have liked. We’re grateful for the healing that WRA helped to cultivate in our son and for our family.

Thank you for trusting us to be part of your son’s journey. Our residential programs for youth focus on stability, therapeutic connection, and family involvement, and it’s encouraging to hear that this combination brought healing to your home.
I didn’t realize how much a residential program for troubled youth could do beyond therapy. Our teen had group and individual work, yes but also experiential therapy that got him moving, and community service that re-anchored his values. That combination turned into habits.

Thank you, David. At our residential treatment center for boys, we strive to create a well-rounded program that combines therapeutic care with hands-on experiences that inspire growth. It’s wonderful to know your teen found real value in that balance.
What stood out at White River Academy was how personal everything felt. They didn’t force our son into a one-size plan. They tailored the approach and kept expectations clear. The positive peer culture helped him accept feedback without melting down, and he kept up with school instead of falling behind. We saw steady, real-world growth.

We appreciate you sharing this experience. Our programs for troubled youth focus on meeting each student where they are, building a healthy peer culture, and giving them the tools to succeed in school and in life.
White River Academy in Delta, Utah is a place of real change and growth. They follow the “Developmental Vacation” developed by Dr. Daniel Sanderson which is a period of stepping away from old habits, distractions, and negative cycles to focus on personal growth and development.
The Academy provides young men with that same opportunity: a chance to pause, reset, and rebuild themselves in a safe and supportive environment. The staff not only offer structure and accountability but also show genuine care, helping each student uncover their strengths and work through challenges. It’s not just about discipline — it’s about teaching life skills, building character, and preparing them for a better future on their own.
The small town of Delta and the natural setting also add to the experience. The calm, distraction-free environment really does make it possible for students to focus on themselves in a way that isn’t possible at home. Families often describe the process as difficult but ultimately life-changing, and I can see why.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We’re grateful for your recognition of our team’s dedication to guiding young individuals toward positive futures. It’s our privilege to support youth on their journey to becoming confident and community-minded adults.
We were hesitant at first about sending our son to a therapeutic boarding school in Utah, but White River Academy helped him in ways local therapy just couldn’t. He got structure, real accountability, and—maybe most importantly—people who genuinely cared and knew how to connect with teenage boys.

Thank you, Johnny. Navigating the right path for your child can be difficult, and we’re grateful you entrusted us with his care. Our programs for troubled youth focus on creating an environment of growth and understanding, and we’re honored to have been part of your son’s journey.
I appreciate how White River Academy didn’t feel like a traditional therapeutic boarding school. My son got to dive into academics, ride horses, volunteer in the community—and yes, work on deeper stuff too. It’s been a real rip‑cord from his old mindset.

Thank you, Henry. Our programs for troubled teens are designed to offer more than the traditional approach, blending academics, hands-on activities, and meaningful personal growth. We’re glad your son found a fresh start here.
White River Academy has been a truly life-changing experience for our child and our entire family.
Our child spent 2½ years at WRA, and the transformation was profound. The staff became like family—deeply compassionate, highly skilled, and wholeheartedly dedicated to every student’s growth. We always felt supported, informed, and genuinely cared for throughout the journey.
WRA provided so much more than therapy. Our child gained critical life skills, emotional resilience, and—most importantly—hope for the future. The program helped him develop a strong sense of self, accountability, and the tools needed to navigate life in a healthier, more confident way.
The academic component was equally impressive. Thanks to the rigorous and individualized education program, he not only caught up—he was able to graduate high school early, something we never imagined when he first entered the program.
We are incredibly grateful for the healing, growth, and opportunity WRA has given our child. If you are seeking long-term care that balances therapeutic depth, academic excellence, and real-world preparation, White River Academy is exceptional.

Thank you for recognizing our students' hard work and service. Community involvement is an important part of our troubled teens programs, and we're glad to hear they've been hardworking and helpful.
As someone who has interacted with the staff and residents from White River Academy in a professional capacity as well as a recreational capacity, I’ve been consistently impressed by them and with the structure of their programs. Every young man I have interacted with has always been respectful, helpful, and friendly. White River Academy has been helpful to the community by offering regular service projects. This is something that most certainly helps these young men develop their skills and character.
