Wes, Shane and the team at Wax Eloquent are amazing. Not only are they professional and knowledgeable across the board in marketing, they are genuinely some of the nicest and helpful people as well. I have had an ongoing marketing issue that has been the bane of my existence for months and in twenty minutes of working with Wax Eloquent the issue was resolved. The long in short is that while Wax Eloquent is a very professional and kind company to work with, they were wholly unequipped to handle an ecommerce brand. They were transparent with the fact they had never worked with a company like ours, but were confident they could make it work. However, I felt as if I had to babysit the whole process and it was anything but "hands off".
My story starts with Weston Wax and I connecting. After a few calls where Weston said "with that many leads you WILL get sales." I decided it was a good move to work with them.
We are a young company with a limited budget. I asked if they would be willing to work on a percentage of sales and they declined, acting as if that isn't the norm for ad agencies. They charged us a discounted rate of $2500 (for creative) + roughly $3000 (ad spend) a month. I trusted them.
However, the issues started showing pretty apparently after the first couple of creative ads they made. The work they put into the creative ads were VERY minimal. Everything looked like a template that didn't go along with our brand. Text covering logos, colors off, pricing wrong, etc. Looked as if it took no more than an hour to make. At some point during all of this we had a guy named Bill come in and create a drip campaign where the copy was so uninspired, I had to check and make sure ChatGPT didn't write it. But we were not making sales, and I just wanted to trust the process and their expertise. "What do I know?" so I let them do their thing. I understood there was strategy behind the scenes, so that justified the $2500/mo we were spending in my mind. At this point I figured it was just part of the "getting used to working together" journey.
I inquired once again to move to a performance based compensation plan, and Weston declined. But after another month of service, bringing our prices down, and everything I had to stop service. We were out of money to spend on ads and we had seene $0 in sales.
At this point, I still owed them roughly $12k in work they had done, to which Weston gracely decided to delay payment because we hadn't made sales. This was due to a family emergency I had and unexpected expenses. He offered his prayers and condolences, and for a time, a delay in needing to make payment.
When I told Weston that we needed to stop service, he gave me a response that eluded to the product being the issue. I told him that I was dissatisfied with the service his company had provided and laid out my points. He responded by calling me "bold" for giving feedback when I still owed them - in the face of all the grace they had given me. So I promptly paid. He went silent for about two weeks. He later responded with a long message that included the line: "I wish we weren't the first company you worked with". I couldn't agree more.
The person we are working with now not only agreed to work on a percentage of sales, but also looked at the creative that Wax had made and called it "extremely boring, and uninspired." We are already making sales with them and are extremely happy with the results. This other person came in with an attack plan - we can truly lean on them as experts in their field.
Wax Eloquent is not a bad company, but a young company that did not serve our company well. If you are a lawn care company or a pool cleaning company, they are probably perfect. Anything more complicated, I would recommend going to someone more seasoned.
We were not able to trust them as experts.
