Disappointing and unwelcoming experience – inconsistent service
We had a very poor experience with the crew from the moment we arrived. We were a group of eight, including four children, and arrived 20 minutes before boarding. Just before boarding began, we realized we needed to collect physical boarding passes from the counter.
Two of us rushed to the counter while the rest of the group stayed at the entrance. The crew member advised the remaining group members to wait to the side until the passes were sorted. However, once we returned with the passes, the same crew member insisted that our entire group move to the very back of the big queue, pretending she had never told us to wait aside.
As a result our boarding got late and we were unable to find seats together and were scattered across different areas of the boat. This made the trip dull and disconnected for our family.
What made the situation worse was witnessing the same crew member allow another family in the exact same situation to board without going to the back of the line. This inconsistency felt targeted, and I couldn't help but wonder if our skin color played a role in this unfair treatment.
The staff member in question was wearing a blue T-shirt with "Photographer" printed on the back.
We paid full price for a family experience that was ultimately ruined by poor service. I will not be recommending this anymore.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience with Sunlover Reef Cruises. It’s perfect for families—very well organized, safe, and ideal for anyone looking to enjoy snorkeling, even with kids. The reef experience was unforgettable, and everything was handled smoothly from start to finish.
The staff were exceptional—friendly, helpful, and always making sure everyone was comfortable and having a great time. A special mention to Leo, who took us on the glass bottom boat tour. He was amazing—extremely knowledgeable and made the experience even more enjoyable with his insights.
A big thank you to the entire team for making this such a memorable day. Highly recommended!

I recently went on a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef with Sunlover Reef Cruises from Cairns, and unfortunately, the experience did not live up to expectations, especially considering the price.
First, I want to acknowledge the staff on board. They were incredibly friendly, professional, and did their best to look after everyone throughout the day. I genuinely have nothing negative to say about their service.
However, the overall experience was disappointing. The boat felt overcrowded, which made the journey uncomfortable from the start. On top of that, the sea conditions were extremely rough on the day of our trip so much so that it made the ride unpleasant and, at times, difficult to manage. Once we reached the reef, the rough conditions also made snorkeling far less enjoyable than it should have been.
What was most frustrating is that the trip still went ahead despite those conditions. I expect the company will respond by saying they operate within government weather guidelines and that conditions were technically “within limits” on the day. However, when more than half the passengers are vomiting in their seats and the crew is running out of towels and sick bags, it’s clear that the experience is far from acceptable. Guidelines aside, common sense should prevail and this trip should not have gone ahead.
It gave the impression that the company prioritizes running trips and maximizing profit over ensuring guests have a safe and enjoyable experience. The advertising sets high expectations, but the reality did not match what was promised.
Overall, while the staff did an excellent job, the experience itself was not worth the cost. I left feeling disappointed and somewhat misled.

Kevin, thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We also appreciate your generous comments about our crew. They work incredibly hard to care for guests, particularly on more challenging weather days, and we will make sure that is passed on.
We are genuinely sorry that the day did not meet your expectations. Travelling to the Outer Great Barrier Reef from Cairns does mean crossing open water, and that route is naturally exposed to south-easterly trade winds and swell. It is not a sheltered journey, and conditions can sometimes make the crossing uncomfortable.
For clarity, conditions are assessed by our Captain, and our Captains would never place guests in danger. If conditions are not safe to operate, we do not depart. There is an important difference between a crossing being rough and a crossing being unsafe, even though we fully understand that for some guests a rough trip can still feel unpleasant and exhausting. The vessel is surveyed to carry significantly more guests than we take on a standard day and has seating both inside and outside, so perceptions of crowding can vary depending on where guests choose to sit and how conditions feel on the day.
Our crew spend a great deal of time before departure encouraging guests to prepare properly, including taking preventative seasickness medication in advance and staying hydrated. Unfortunately, not everyone heeds that advice, and once a vessel is offshore, the effects of swell can be much harder to manage.
Once guests arrive at Moore Reef, the pontoon itself is stable and fixed, which provides a far calmer base for enjoying the reef. Even on days when the journey out is uncomfortable, guests are still able to access our coral lagoon and the activities from a secure platform on the reef.
We regret that the sea conditions affected your enjoyment of the day, but we do appreciate your recognition of the team who worked hard to support guests throughout the trip.

We haven't even gone on the tour yet but just booking has been a absolute nightmare.
The pay pal payment malfunctioned. But withdrew the amount from my end. Their emails kept saying outstanding amount on confirmation booking... I called and spoke to reception 4x over 4 days confirmation it was paid in full. Still unsatisfied. I called again to complain about my bill saying outstanding and that I'd like one confirmation paid as they had told me many times.
To my surprise this time reception advised me that it had not been paid for.... ok so then I send a email asking for a manager or someone in finance to contact me. Radio silence. They haven't replied to any emails.
We have also now paid AGAIN and still not received a confirmation email...
This is appalling.
CAN SOMEONE IN THIS BUISNESS REACH OUT TO ME AND FIX THIS MESS!

Hi Alisha, we are very sorry for the frustration this has caused.
We understand how upsetting it is to see conflicting payment messages, especially after multiple calls and emails trying to get a clear answer before your trip. This issue was made more difficult by the public holiday period, and our reservations team can not access the PayPal platform only our accounting team are able to properly trace what had occurred from your side.
Our finance team is now looking into the payment records and the duplicate charge concern as a priority. We have only recently started using PayPal as a payment option, so we are also working through the additional reconciliation steps required when a transaction does not sync through as expected.
Please send your original PayPal confirmation, including any transaction reference numbers, to finance@sunlover.com.au if you have not already done so. That will allow the team to match the payment trail properly and resolve this as quickly as possible.

It was an incredible experience. Seeing the vibrant coral up close and spotting a turtle was truly unforgettable. The whole trip felt special and well worth it.
One thing that could be improved is stronger emphasis on conservation and guidance around protecting marine life. We noticed several people touching the coral and even petting the turtle. Interactions like this can harm this delicate ecosystem and make wildlife, especially turtles, more vulnerable through human interference.

Thank you, Kate, for such a thoughtful review.
We’re so pleased to hear your day at Moore Reef was such a memorable one. Seeing coral up close and spotting a turtle on the Great Barrier Reef is something very special, and we’re glad your trip with Sunlover Reef Cruises felt well worth it.
We also really appreciate you raising the importance of protecting marine life. You are absolutely right. Coral is alive, turtles are wild animals, and respectful behaviour in the water is essential to protecting this extraordinary ecosystem.
This messaging of "no touching" is currently shared with guests through our snorkel safety video, onboard signage, QR-code guest information about Moore Reef, and signage on the pontoon at the entrances to the water, your feedback is a valuable reminder that when it comes to reef conservation, we may need to make that message even more visible and impossible to miss.
Thank you again for travelling with us and for taking the time to leave such considered feedback. It means a great deal to know you had an unforgettable Great Barrier Reef experience, and we also appreciate you speaking up for the reef and the wildlife that make Moore Reef so special.

Excellent staff. Our trip out to the reef was difficult due to high swells. We were warned that weather conditions can be rough, but there were people puking all around the deck. The staff handled things quickly and professionally making the best of a bad situation. We were told this rarely happens.
Once we were tied up to the pontoon things ran smoothly despite occasional drizzly rain. Instructions were clear and repeated several time. Safety seems to be their primary concern.
A hot buffet lunch was included and it was pretty good. Snorkeling and other activities were terrific.

The trip out to Moore Reef can feel very different depending on the day’s sea conditions, and while rough crossings are not the norm, they can happen when there is strong swell about. A good rule of thumb for travellers on boats anywhere in the world is this: if the crew recommend seasickness medication, it is best to take it early rather than waiting until you feel unwell.
We are very pleased to hear our team handled the conditions quickly and professionally and that, once you arrived at the pontoon, the day ran smoothly. Clear safety briefings, repeated instructions and a well-run operation matter even more when the weather is less than perfect, so it is lovely to know that stood out to you.
It is also great to hear you enjoyed the hot buffet lunch, snorkelling and activities at Moore Reef. Even with a little drizzle, the Great Barrier Reef still has a way of delivering something special.
Thank you again for choosing Sunlover Reef Cruises. We hope to welcome you back for a calmer crossing next time.

We specifically booked Sunlover Reef Tour for my 2 kids as it is advertised it to be the only reef pantoon with 30m spiral slide and the child enclosed pool.
It’s extremely disappointing that the website didn’t mention anything that both the slide and the child enclosed pool were closed .
Child pool closed due to cyclone - last week- which mean it’s been closed for the entire week….
We paid full price for the tour and yet the 2 amenities were not available.
It’s false advertisement isn’t it…
If it’s only going to the reef- there are many other your agents that can get our family there .

Thank you so much for choosing Sunlover Reef Cruises for your family's Great Barrier Reef adventure — we know how much thought goes into planning a special day out with the kids!
We completely understand why this was disappointing, especially when the waterslide and enclosed children's pool were part of the reason you chose Sunlover for your family day on the reef.
Following Cyclone Narelle, both facilities were temporarily closed for safety reasons. We did have a notice displayed across our website — including on both the Moore Reef and Reef and Island pages — as well as signage at our reservations counter, to keep guests informed ahead of their visit. At the time, we were awaiting inspector availability and did not yet have a confirmed reopening timeline to share.
The great news is that the enclosed children's pool has since been repaired and is back open! Our waterslide is still on its way back — replacement parts are on order and our team is working hard to get it back in action bigger and better than ever.
We hope the magic of Moore Reef itself — the snorkelling, underwater observatory, and glass-bottom boat — still made for a wonderful family memory. There is truly nowhere else on Earth quite like the Great Barrier Reef!
We'd love to welcome your family back once the waterslide is fully restored. Thank you again for sailing with us!
While the tour itself was still operating safely to Moore Reef, we do appreciate that for families booking specifically for these features, their temporary closure impacts the day. The children’s pool has since been repaired.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.
Kind regards,
The Sunlover Reef Cruises Crew

We would like to sincerely thank one of your amazing team members, Sandy, for her outstanding support during our snorkelling experience in Cairns at the Great Barrier Reef.
My wife is not a confident swimmer, and without hesitation, Sandy jumped into the water to assist her. She stayed by her side, ensured her safety, and even took the time to show her the beautiful coral reefs, turning what could have been a stressful experience into a truly memorable one.
Sandy’s kindness, professionalism, and genuine care were truly remarkable. She was extremely polite, helpful, and respectful throughout, and her dedication to her role did not go unnoticed. We were genuinely amazed to see such a high level of commitment and compassion within your crew.
Please convey our heartfelt appreciation to Sandy. We wish her continued success and many great achievements ahead in her career.
Thank you once again for such an incredible experience.

Helping guests feel safe and supported in the water is such an important part of what we do at Sunlover Reef Cruises, especially for first-time or less confident snorkellers visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Thank you again for choosing to spend your day with us in Cairns. We are so pleased your snorkelling experience became such a positive memory, and we hope to welcome you both back again for another day on the reef.

Good value trip to Fitzroy Island
Overall, this was good value for money. The transfer left on time, there was plenty of time to explore the island, and the packed lunch was a nice touch. However, I did feel that there wasn’t a clear system in place to account for all passengers. Compared to other reef tours I’ve done, it felt a bit unstructured, and it seemed possible for someone to be left behind. Still, a good option if you’re looking for a simple and affordable day trip.
We went diving with Andrea in Moore Reef, it was the remarkable and incredible experience, she made the experience better, specially since it was our first time, I was a little bit nervous but she encouraged me to do it! Thank you 🐠🫶🏻
We booked the Moore Reef, a helicopter tour and Flitzon Island, everything was amazing from start to finish, friendly staff.

Good day despite the awful weather. Didn’t get to do some activities because of weather. Boat crew fantastic and also on the pontoon! Prepare for a rough ride and take anti sickness pills! 🤮

Thank you, Glynis, for your understanding and for still taking the time to leave a review. In the days after Cyclone Narelle, we were still seeing some residual effects in the surface conditions, so we really appreciate your patience.
We know many guests travel a very long way and often only have one chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef, so if it is safe to operate, we do our very best to get guests out to the pontoon and make the most of the day. That said, some activities do need to be adjusted when weather and sea conditions are not suitable.
We are so pleased to hear our boat crew and pontoon team helped make it a good day despite the conditions. Thank you as well for the helpful tip about seasickness tablets — definitely wise advice on rougher-weather days. We hope we can welcome you back again in calmer conditions.

Loved the cruise to Moore reef. Staff are legend! The snorkeling was fun, buffet good and the submersible boat was well worth it. So many activities and manageable with about 200 persons on the trip.
