AVOID this place unless you want to throw away $10,000+ and have NOTHING to show for it. Scammers? Shysters? Liars? Yes to all. Horrible communication. If you DO email them in an attempt to get ANY type of update (after WEEKS of silence goes by), you’ll be charged for it pronto.
I hired the firm in August of 2024 after my husband went to jail for domestic violence. Started out with Blake, who (as I learned later) not only lied to me about facts of divorce, but, billed me for things he absolutely did not do; he invoiced me for having the divorce petition delivered, when that never happened. Blake left the firm without a word, and my counsel was replaced with Julie Jernigan. When I first met Julie, I was so full of hope. Here was a country girl who was tough as nails and seemed to really empathize with my situation. Turns out, it was all just a show, an act. Are they ALL like this, at this firm? Is this something Shannon prides herself on?
Hearing after hearing going by without ANYTHING being accomplished; but I was being billed THOUSANDS of dollars. FOR NOTHING. I was told that “the judge is being too lenient with his lawyer” and “he just can’t get those documents that we need” and “this is a real head scratcher for us”, and my favorite – after I sent her a long email stating that I refuse to go bankrupt for a simple divorce and I’m losing hope in her and her firm – “heard and understood, we will get this done”. Two months AFTER that – and another few thousand dollars later – crickets, no communication, NOTHING has been done on my case.
I reached the point (after pushing close to the $11,000 mark and losing all hope I’d ever get free of my abuser), I hired another lawyer and had Shannon & Julie fired. And of course – that too came with its own issues: I was told by the "accounting team" that it would be "30 to 60 days" to receive my refund. I called at the 30 day point and the 60 day point and was given the same line: "30 to 60 days, accounting team is still reviewing." Sent an email well after the 60 day point and got the same response back. I then replied and threatened to report them to the KY Bar Association if I didn't receive an update back by end of day about my refund. Surprise, surprise; they called me within a few hours and said "your check is ready" and gave me some lame excuse that Shannon was away for personal reasons and couldn't sign the check. Um... what?! You told me (again; more lies) that your "accounting team was reviewing the file". Not that your lead shyster was on vacation and couldn't sign the check.
If I had not been under the gun in August 2024 (literally…): I would have read reviews BEFORE speaking to anyone at Shannon’s firm. The amount of 1 star reviews is eye opening; and you need to really take those 1 stars to heart. This is truly how this firm actually is. They’ll send you multiple large invoices and deliver nothing, give you silence or worse – admit they have no clue how to move forward or what they are even doing! Seeing their posts on Facebook of their happy Thanksgiving and epic Christmas party and all the fun they were having… made me mad as hell. Myself, as well as other clients who were being scammed by them, were funding these nice parties and outings; meanwhile, we’re having trouble keeping the lights on because we’re bleeding thousands of dollars a month to them for absolutely NOTHING.
Avoid, avoid, avoid. What should have been a simple divorce cost double, because of Shannon’s firm and her shady, unknowledgeable, scamming lawyers. And my divorce was considered "easy" (no kids, and the husband is incarcerated so it's not like he's missing). Imagine if your divorce is complicated with multiple kids and assets to split!
My divorce is now moving forward in the court system with my new attorney. If I'd stayed with Shannon Smith Law, I'd still be bleeding thousands a month to them with no divorce in sight.
I've filed a complaint with the KY Bar Association, and I hope others who have left 1-star reviews will, too.

I came to the firm looking for help as I had gotten my kids kept from me and had limited time to be able to see them. I was pretty hopeless after being taken to court twice and each time losing more. I was a father that was trying to do right and simply wanting to be able to be a dad. Julie met with me and was there to keep the wolves at bay long enough for us to be able to fight back. A bit slow at first and a bit discouraging however things made full circle and while my situation could be more in my favor I chose to just keep as much peace as possible however if I did choose to fight and go head first she is completely prepared to do so and I couldn’t ask for a better representative on my team. Our relationship feels more personable than a typical client/attorney and I feel I have someone that truly cares and who takes my case to heart and I appreciate everything that she has accomplished for me so far with more plans in the near future that I no longer stress having to pursue.

Paid over 9 grand, never went to court, I think I received 3 phone calls, they never returned calls or messages. Can go into much more detail but please research before using them.
Going through the divorce process with Karen and Chelsea have been so helpful. Both are very professional and thoughtful. Chelsea is incredibly diligent on communication. She’s been very helpful on addressing all of my questions and concerns. I couldn’t be more thankful!

I expected professional advocacy, but instead, I felt like just another invoice. I would not recommend this firm to anyone looking for an attorney who actually cares about their clients. Constant communication breakdowns, excessive fees, and lack of diligence are only the beginning of the problems with this firm. Please do not walk away, RUN. They also illegally advertise, which I have copies of, and I am filing a complaint with KBAR for misrepresentation. They advertise you get a free consultation, but when you call, the consultation is $100.00 because the "free" consultation is only for family law which violates Kentucky Bar Association rules in advertising as well as the Attorneys' Advertising Commission (AAC) and I am preparing a complaint to both.
Within 24 hours of terminating them, I found much better representation who was appalled by their lack of objections in court (which makes an appeal impossible) and 100% complete lack of follow-up or proactive actions on behalf of the client.
Their response to me was reactionary, and even then, they didn't follow-up. I am shocked they did not charge me for their lunches and breaks, but the day is young. I have no idea how this firm is still in business, but I have other attorneys filing with me for their KBAR and advertising complaint.
I appreciate the professional and personalized experience provided. The service here was top notch.
