I am writing this review from the school’s jungle-like gardens, listening to the sound of bird song in the trees. There is a cool breeze blowing in off the lake. The palapa that I am studying in, has a beautiful view of the lake - see attached photo.
In addition to the noise of birds, there is the distant sound of happy children attending the school’s own “proyecto” which is called Ninos del Largo.
This is the fifth time that my wife and I have returned to this school since 2015.
We keep coming back for various reasons:
- the language teachers are experienced, patient and kind. My teacher, Saydy possesses a wonderful sense of humour. She has a particular expertise with young children. Saydy makes the lessons into games, so that the children have a lot of fun.
- the garden provides an oasis of tranquility after the noise and bustle of the rest of San Pedro
- we love volunteering at the “Ninos de Lago” After School centre. The Facebook page is Ninos de Lago San Pedro. Nahomy, the Maestra in charge of the centre , has created a wonderful atmosphere. She is totally charismatic and the children adore her. She is having a huge impact. Her lessons are filling in the gaps of the schooling that her students receive in the morning. For instance Nahomy is giving English lessons to the students long before they ever will study it at school. It is a real privilege to be able to volunteer at this Proyecto! The children are completely charming! They are super appreciative and have a tremendous sense of fun. I would encourage anybody who is interested in the experience, to volunteer. Nahomy is an expert at harnessing the greater or lesser (in my case!) skills of the volunteers. If you can do arithmetic, or speak English - you can make a difference!
- finally, the school’s owner Ramon and his son Mario live up to the school’s motto of “Uniting Cultures”. Attending this school is a great way to experience the warmth and welcome of the Mayan culture.

We had an amazing week of classes and home stay with San Pedro school. It came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Our teacher Saydy was fantastic and by the end of the week we had learned so much and felt far more confident. Saydy was very attentive and helped us with everything. The best teacher I have ever had!
The food included was also delicious everyday.
I would highly recommend to all!
We attended San Pedro Spanish school for 1 week and we loved it! We had Saydy as our teacher and she couldn’t have been more helpful and kind. We had no Spanish coming here and she was patient and made the classes fun and enjoyable. We wish we had another week here and can’t thank Saydy enough!
The school has a beautiful jungle like setting and is very relaxing.
We also did the home stay and had a great experience with Maria and her family. The school offers a free gym also which is great addition to being in a routine.
I have just finished my first week learning Spanish and can not recommend San Pedro Spanish school more highly.
Our teacher, Sandra, was excellent. She was patient with us and tailored the lessons to meet our needs. In 1 week, she has helped us to become more confident in our day to day interactions with the locals.
The school is a beautiful location, with great coffee and tasty snacks every day.
Our homestay was also excellent. Conchita and her family were so welcoming, and the food was incredible. It really helped to practice our Spanish with them every day.
Lastly, the school offers daily activities, and there is a local gym nearby you can use free of charge.

A fantastic school no matter what level of Spanish you have (I started with absolutely zero). I spent a week here learning the basics with my wife and had a great time. We learned so much in such a short time! The teachers are fantastic (ask for Zandra!) and most importantly patient. The school itself is beautiful and right beside the lake. La escuela de español Sano Pedro ha sido lo mejor que me podía haber pasado.
Ramón tiene su escuela totalmente bajo control y su organización es excelente.
Mi profesora Saydy fue siempre muy paciente conmigo y se adaptó a mis deseos, ya que yo estaba principalmente interesada en practicar la menor cantidad posible de teoría y la mayor cantidad posible de expresión oral.
Las actividades culturales fueron muy variadas y emocionantes - mi favorita fue la charla de Felipe sobre "El conflicto armado en Guatemala, el caso de San Pedro La Laguna".
También tuve muchisima suerte con mi familia anfitriona María Méndez. No sólo las comidas diarias juntos fueron muy divertidas y entretenidas, sino que también pude aprender mucho sobre la vida de la "gente chapín normal".
El lema de la escuela, "uniendo culturas", no son sólo palabras, sino una realidad cotidiana.

Die Schule hat eine gute Lage in San Pedro und der Unterricht findet in einem wunderschönen Garten direkt am See statt. Ich habe mich sehr gut mit meinem Lehrer Mario verstanden und habe viel gelernt. Dazu ist die Schule ein sehr sozialer Ort, an dem man leicht Leute kennenlernt. Es werden auch verschiedene Unternehmungen angeboten. Ich würde auf jeden Fall wiederkommen :)

Saydy es una profesora magnífica, comprensiva y atenta. gracias por todo. realmente me ayudaste.
La escuela es un lugar magnífico cerca del lago, y con un jardín lleno de árboles.
Lamentablemente tengo que cambiar de opinión por el mal servicio de transporte. Transporte que pagué por adelantado.
Cuando llegué a San Pedro esperé 1 hora a que alguien viniera a recogerme, como previsto.
Disculpé este incidente.
Cuando me fui, no tenía las indicaciones correctas para tomar el autobús y la escuela ni siquiera me dio el nombre de la agencia, ni tickets. Lo encontré milagrosamente por mi cuenta a 100 metros de donde me habían dejado. Muy muy estresante.

I spent 1 week learning spanish with Saydy who was an amazing teacher and made every lesson really fun! I’ve learnt so much in a week and can now communicate with my host family. Kina has been a lovely mum for the week, so caring and she cooks delicious meals (even gluten free especially for me). Thanks so much!

Fui a caminar al volcán Acatenango y conocí a una chica se llama Siobhan. Ella me dijó sobre la Escuela San Pedro de Español y estuve muy interesada. Después de una semana en San Marcos ví a Siobhan en el Trampólin y hablé con ella de la semana. Ella dijó solo buenas cosas de su experiencia. Entonces yo escribí a escuela el próximo día para pedir la misma familia, pero también el mismo cuarto y la misma maestra! Hoy me siento sentarme con mucha suerte por una increíble Maestra y por la familia García.
Aprendí mucha información y estoy muy feliz y agradecida.

Wow. I spent 5 weeks here learning Spanish and couldn't have been more impressed by the kindness, professionalism, beauty, and effectiveness of San Pedro Spanish School. I spent 4 hours each morning learning with my fantastic instructor and "guía" Clemente (who beyond being a fantastic teacher, is also a fantastic human).
Coming into the school I had a confident base in the present tense, and that was about it... In just 5 weeks I felt incredibly well versed in past, future, imperative, conditional, and even a bit of subjunctive! Clemente did an amazing job tailoring lessons to my requests and learning styles, and I progressed way more than I thought possible.
In addition to setting me up with an amazing teacher, Ramón, Mario, and the entire administration connected my friend and I with THE most incredible host family in the world. Quina, Domingo, and their entire family welcomed us from day one as their "hijos" and kept us comfortable, well fed, and happy for our entire stay.
I would be hard pressed to recommend anywhere in the world more than I'd recommend Clemente, Quina, and the entire San Pedro Spanish School as the next place to continue your Spanish journey :)

San Pedro is a very special school. It’s a beautiful spot - little huts spread through the woods leading down to the water. The atmosphere created by the teachers is perfect - fun, inclusive, with lots of activities in the afternoons and evenings so that you can get to know fellow students. Most of all, the teachers are excellent, and by the end of the seven days I felt like I had really improved. The school is the perfect place to learn Spanish, meet new people, and explore the rest of the lake.

Had such an amazing experience at San Pedro Spanish School, I did one week of schooling and also did the homestay.
My teacher Clemente, was extremely helpful and accomodating to my Spanish level, he was also mega super nice and was happy to have a laugh and a joke.
My homestay experience was something I will remember for my whole life, I felt so welcomed by them and really did feel apart of the family.
Would highly recommend this school to anyone!

My husband and I took Spanish classes for a week with Saydy and absolutely loved every minute of it! She is an amazing teacher and we are so sad not to see her every day. We learned more than we thought we would. Everybody here is so fun and friendly. We would recommend this to anybody who is planning on being in Guatemala for a longer period of time. It is worth the time and money😊

Estudié aquí durante 2 semanas y lo pasé fantástico. ¡Aprendí mucho en la escuela con Eliza, mi brillante maestra! Eliza me enseñó muchas cosas sobre la cultura de los mayas y por supuesto gramática, vocabulario, conjugaciones y más. Recomiendo alojarse en una casa de familia porque puedes practicar con ellos y aprender la cultura. Las actividades fueron muy divertidas, por ejemplo jugamos un partido de fútbol, hubo un tour de chocolate y mi favorita fue la clase de salsa y bachata. ¡Muchas gracias por todo!

My experience in this school and homestay is already one of my highlights of my trip. I came into the school with little to no experience speaking or understanding spanish, however, in one week, I now feel I have a great foundation to hold conversations and am confident in communicating with locals.
My teacher Clemente tailored the classes to my needs and was very thorough and easy to understand in his explanations. He was also very easy to have a laugh with and made the lessons fun.
My family were also very sweet and made a big effort to help me practice my spanish. The meals they provided were also delicious.
I couldnt recommend this more!

The school was excellent, can’t recommend it enough, learnt a lot of Spanish in a week and feel much more confident getting around Central America. My teacher was Mario who was really nice and a great teacher. We stayed at casa Guillermo batz, the family and the food were lovely. 10/10
