How can a country that had a black slave past brought from Africa be racist? Before coming to spend my holidays in the Dominican Republic, I had been warned of this reality, but I was not paying attention. From Miami, we had bought our tickets, booked a good hotel on the Condé. So far so good. But we have been deadly disappointment today at the Sandro beauty salon in Sambil, Santo Domingo.
While visiting the mall, I wanted to cut my 6 year old boy's hair. I went to see Sandro's receptionist who looked down on me. I asked her the price twice. She didn't want to answer. A 50-year-old gentleman, apparently the manager was very close to her, he hadn't wanted to give the price either. Seeing me insist, the receptionist told me to follow her and led me to a hairdresser without giving the price. When the hairdresser was finished, he told me 750 pesos, the equivalent of $15. My problem is not the price, although the price was more than double the established price. My problem is the double standard. From manager to receptionist to hairdresser, they have established a racist network of discrimination based on skin color to discourage blacks from visiting their salon.
The worst, the receptionist had the courage to say that I had not asked the price before.
Such a great country with tourist potential cannot suffer from the non-professionalism of these people. The Sandro beauty salon of Sambil has failed to prove the warm welcome of the Dominicans and I am not convinced that the other Dominican citizens are of the caliber of these mafiosos.
¿Cómo puede ser racista un país que tuvo un pasado de esclavos negros arrancado de África? Antes de venir a pasar mis vacaciones a República Dominicana, me habían advertido de esta realidad, pero no estaba prestando atención. Desde Miami, habíamos comprado nuestros boletos, reservado un buen hotel en el Condé. Hasta ahora, todo bien. Pero grande fue nuestra decepción hoy en el salón de belleza Sandro de Sambil en Santo Domingo. Mientras visitaba el centro comercial, quería cortarle el pelo a mi hijo de 6 años. Fui a ver a la recepcionista de Sandro que me menospreció. Le pregunté el precio. Ella no quiso responder. Un señor de 50 años, al parecer el gerente era muy cercano a ella, tampoco había querido dar el precio. Al verme insistir, la recepcionista me dijo que la siguiera y me llevó a una peluquería sin darme el precio. Cuando terminó el peluquero, me dijo 750 pesos, el equivalente a $15. Mi problema no es el precio, aunque el precio era más del doble del precio establecido. Mi problema es el doble rasero. Desde gerente hasta recepcionista y peluquero, han establecido una red racista de discriminación basada en el color de la piel para disuadir a los negros de visitar su establecimiento. Lo peor la recepcionista tuvo el coraje de decir que no le había preguntado el precio antes. Un país tan grande y con potencial turístico no puede sufrir por la falta de profesionalismo de esta gente. El salón de belleza Sandro de Sambil ha negado la calurosa acogida de los dominicanos y no me convence que los demás ciudadanos dominicanos sean del calibre de estos mafiosos.
