Amazing tour! This tour was incredible. Great value at $20 for a over an hour with Judy, 5th generation owners, giving us a drive around their family quarry of famous Oaramru stone. Absolutely fascinating to see- really informative. We were a couple doing this tour but would also recommend for families as the kids would love to see the diggers up close. Highly recommend!

Massive A wonderful education on how this rock is formed and the huge asset it is to NZ. You love Oamaru stone and the people who mine it after a visit.

History dating back millions of years. This is the most fascinating view into the distant past being taken into the present by modern methods.

Geology This is a wonderful place to see what passing millennia have done to the little organisms that existed then. They have produced a remarkable building material which has been used in public buildings throughout NZ since the mid 1800s. This is a beautiful cream coloured limestone that can be cut with an ordinary saw, wood screws put in and nails driven in. Remarkable.

Off the beaten track.... I'd say you are a bit off the beaten track here, you can find the Parkside Limestone Quarry in Weston, Oamaru, check out http://www.oamarustone.co.nz/ for tour information. Worth a look if you are interested to see how the Oamaru Whitestone is cut out from the Earth, in the past and as it is quarried today. This is the same type of stone that the buildings in Bath, England were constructed from; The Oamaru Historic Precinct has also been built of Oamaru Whitestone, which emulates British architecture and history. Oamaru Whitestone is a soft stone, a favourite medium for sculptors, you will also see various sculpture scattered about the quarry, after the tour take a picnic and relax in the gardens, where you can wander about the sculptures. The Garden is used also as a Wedding and Function venue.
