Anyone interested in really learning to play guitar should check-out Northville Guitar Lessons. James, Emily and Paul provide a relaxed and fun environment geared to all levels from absolute beginner to advanced. Both James and Paul are professional guitarists so you're learning from the best.
I've had a fantastic learning experience participating in Northville Guitar Lessons! The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and experienced and also know how to create a fun atmosphere. From my first lesson I have noticed steady improvement in my skills. I highly recommend Northville Guitar Lessons for anyone looking to improve their guitar-playing skills!
For the past eight years I have learned how to play songs on the guitar. Over the past eight months at Northville Guitar, I have learned how to play the guitar. Jim’s method of teaching makes guitar playing so simple, I’m teaching my eight year old grandson how to play and he’s asking me to teach him.
I can’t imagine how much better I would be playing if I would have started out at Northville Guitar.

I strongly recommend Northville Guitar Lessons to anyone wanting to learn to play. Classes cover all ages -children to adults, and all skill levels - beginners to professionals. Both Jim and Paul are fantastic teachers customizing class content to the skill level and specific goals of the student.
NGL moved to an online format during the Covid shutdown providing amazing diversified class content, and a much needed "happy place" during a very stressful time.
My son started 6 months ago. He loves going to guitar lessons at Northville Guitar Lessons. The staff is very organized, supportive, and energetic. They helped me buy the right guitar and provide lots of encouragement to my son. I could not be happier with my choice to send him here for lessons. Amazing folks proving to be great role models!
Before stepping into the doors of Northville Guitar ?, I had no musical ? instrument experience. I showed up with a new guitar and some hope. (Sounds like a country song.) The encouragement and lessons I’ve received from Jim and Paul have helped me not only to learn chords, but how to accent them and use arpeggios. I’ve read that many people don’t continue learning guitar after 6 months, but the way lessons progress and because of the reassurance I get from the staff, I’ve continued. Im an older adult, and this is a great source of enjoyment for me thanks to the great people who work with us there.
At the ripe old age of 54, my wife and I decided we wanted to learn to play the guitar. We visited our local Guitar Center and bought a couple of acoustic guitars and some "Teach Yourself" books. It soon became apparent that this process just wasn't going to work for us (something about old dogs and new tricks?). After extensive online research we booked a trial lesson with Northville Guitar Lessons (NGL). After that first visit, we knew we had found our guitar home!
The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, patient, and fun, and there's never any pressure to perform at a certain level. Instruction is tailored to where you are on your guitar journey at any particular time, and where you want to go - from never holding a guitar, to in-depth music theory. We highly recommend Northville Guitar to anyone considering guitar lessons, whether you're just starting out, or have been playing for years and want to hone your skills! You can't go wrong!
Northville Guitar Lessons is the best place I have ever taken lessons!! Instead of just teaching you songs to play, these teachers teach you HOW to play guitar. James Maxwell, the owner and teacher, makes real lesson plans for students and knows exactly where you’re going. I have been playing guitar for about 10 years and was sort of just muddling along. Then I decided to try NGL. What a difference! I’ve learned more in the last year than I did in the previous nine years! It’s like the “give a man a fish” parable. Instead of just working on a specific song with me, they have taught me skills that have allowed me to now learn many songs on my own. They have “ taught me to fish!” I highly recommend you check them out. They are the real deal!!!?
I got a guitar for my birthday in September because its always been my dream to learn to play, but I wasn't sure where to start. After searching everywhere in the region I discovered Emily and James at Northville Guitar lessons.
I had no idea I'd progress as far as I have. It's been only about 6 weeks and I can already play several different versions of chords, arpeggios, picking, rhythm, and a ton more!!
I'm so amped I found this place!! Thank you James and Emily! You guys are amazing!
I wish I could rate this place even more stars. The owners are two of the most genuine, passionate, and nicest people you will ever meet. Right away they treat you like family and it's obvious that they take pride in their business and want you to succeed playing guitar. They will give you all of the tools and resources needed to do it. You just have to do your part. I also love that they listen to your goals and seek feedback.
I'm a slow learner and pretty shy, so I was honestly a little nervous about coming in, but the atmosphere is super relaxed and chill. The instructors are extremely down to earth and rediculously skilled. If you want to get better, you need to surround yourself with better people. These are the guys you want to learn from.
Long story short, I used to play acoustic guitar years ago and kind of lost passion after reading tabs online and watching YouTube videos. Don't do this. I was frustrated because it felt like I wasn't getting any better so I kind of stopping playing. Last Christmas my fiance got me a new electric guitar and I signed up for lessons. It hasn't even been a couple months yet, and I've learned more in these months than I have in entire years learning alone.
If you're reading these reviews and debating whether this is right for you, just do yourself a favor and make the first step. Call them or visit their website (which is what I did). I came in for a lesson and left with a lifelong hobby I'm passionate about again. I'm honestly excited to see where I'll be at in a year.
✌️ ? ✌️
My 13 year old son LOVES coming to lessons here. Jim, the owner, knows how to tune into what each student likes and how they learn best. My son is finally excited to go to lessons after trying other places. Emily handles all the logistics and is always quick to respond to any questions. I highly recommend trying this place out!
As a 56 year old beginner, I was hesitant to start guitar lessons. But I'm so glad I did. Jim and Paul make it fun to learn and I always look forward to my lessons. They guide you at a personalized pace making it interesting but never overwhelming. I'm having a great time learning guitar. I highly recommend Northville guitar lessons.
My 9 year old daughter has had 2 sessions at Northville Guitar Lessons. I'm blown away by what she has already learned to play. Not only is she learning and playing guitar, but she's also learning terminology. The staff at Northville Guitar Lessons are all fabulous! The owners, Jim and Emily, are both super kind, energetic, and very welcoming.
Paul is my daughter's instructor. He's amazing, and I'm truly grateful to have him as a teacher for my child. Here's what my daughter has to say about him: "He makes learning music so much fun.He is really cool, and plays the guitar really, really good. He makes it simple to learn."
Thanks, Paul and Staff! You guys are truly Rock Stars!
After fumbling around for 30+ years, I am finally learning what I should have learned when I was 15 ... This is the instruction I was looking for all along & didn't know it. Jim & Paul and the others are real teachers, not just guitar players making a buck on the side in the dank cellar of a strip mall Guitar Center. Friendly staff, friendly students--and plenty in my decrepit age group.
Hopefully, soon, I'll finally be as good as a 16-year-old!
We have been very happy with the lessons that our son has received at Northville Guitar. Our son began playing real songs almost immediately and shows real improvement each week. The teachers are great and do an excellent job in teaching technique, teaching the students to play together, and also mixing in new songs to keep the students interested. I highly recommend Northville Guitar.
