With the aim of offering a game to my wife who is interested in mahjong, and seduced by the presentation of the Catawiki site which I thought offered "special objects" (that's what they claim to length of lines on their site), reassured by Sarah Le Helley's expertise, I bid on a game that she estimates at €150/200 ("20th century mahjong game", she says).
On December 11, 2023, I won the auction for 83€ (plus 10€83 "buyer protection" fees and 29€ shipping costs from Germany to France - 126€83 in total, all from even), which I resolve immediately. Order 35184461 "20th century A set Chinese mahjong tiles"
Very happy, I inform my wife, and, even before the game is delivered, we discover that the same (strictly the same) can be found at Amazon, at Aliexpress, at Walmart, at DHgate (and so on). ) for a third, or even a quarter, of the price (€30/40 including delivery). I hasten to order Catawiki to refuse payment (on the 16th). Upon receipt, on the 19th, we noted that it was indeed the same item.
1- the object is not a special object;
2- the expertise is completely false.
Catawiki claims to escrow the payment until the buyer receives the item and accepts it, which is false, my payment was transmitted to the seller before I even collected the item and even though I had expressed my refusal to pay.
What followed made me aware of the delaying tactics of Catawiki, almost no response to my emails (responses aside, I am told about the dimensions which are indicated, never a response on the merits), no follow-up after my telephone calls.
IN SUMMARY, CATAWIKI IS A PRETTY WEBSITE WITH NICE PICTURES, BUT DECEPTION ON THE QUALITY, NO SERIOUSNESS AND BAD EXPERTISE.
