the best location for a jungle lodge
the hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Travancore converted to 6 room hotel. situated on the bank of lake Periyar in Periyar National Park . Just for the location itself the hotel is worth every penny you spend. from the hotel you can spend hours & hours looking across the bay for different animals grazing like elephants gaur sambar deer ... and if you are lucky a big cat tiger or leopard would be out in sun on cold morning or taking a dip on a hot summer day. we were lucky to see sambar deer gaur sloth bear and different varieties of birds like wooly necked stork, egrets cormorants bee eaters eagles osprey ..... the rooms are very comfortable and spacious . clean & well maintained . In fact the verandas are great place to be and enjoy cool breeze . Do take take the two side rooms which have larger verandas . but what amazed us was the service specially Anish and Pradeep. we did't go with high expectation , being in the govt sector. The food also was outstanding specially kerala cuisine . overall a great experience and great memories.
Pleasantly surprised.
We had an amazing time at the Lake Palace this week. To be honest we didn’t have very high expectations since the place is government run. But from the moment we were greeted at the boat jetty by the manager Binoy, until we left two days later we were treated like royalty.
The property itself is just beautiful with water all around. The views from the rooms and the lawns is stunning. Although we were not lucky enough to see any elephants or tigers, we had herds of bison’s, sambar deer’s and wild boars give us a show everyday on the bank right across the lawns.
The rooms were exceptionally clean and comfortable. But what made our visit truly memorable was the staff. Everyone of them was attentive, courteous, and eager to help. Two staff members who stood out were Anish & Pradeep. KTDC should train all their staff to be like these two.
There is very poor cell coverage at the property which is perhaps a blessing as you get to really unwind. But one of the members of our group had an urgent Zoom meeting to attend. We asked the Manager if there was anything he could do to help. He immediately arranged for a boat to pick up our friend and took him to the Arya Nivas property where there was better coverage. This is the kind of service that makes you stand out.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Thekkady. You can’t go wrong.
A PIECE OF LAND FALLEN FROM HEAVEN
After visiting Aranya Nivas ,Water scapes ,Tea County ,and Mascot Hotel,(All KTDC Premium Properties ) in the past few years ,this time I decided to stay in Lake Palace .With very sweet memories with their past stays (KTDC ) I decided confidently without any confusion regarding my holiday with KTDC again.
Yes its a real paradise or Heaven for nature lovers.
We were 2 couples their by Dec 8 to 11 for 3 nights and very luckily we were the only guests for all the 3 nights.
Food is great and very specially prepared only for us .
Views from all around the property is great.
And especially from room no 44 and 33.
Room no 33 gives almost the same of 44. So paying extra bugs for 44 is not recommended if u can get 33.
we went for 2 complimentary boat rides on 2 days and saw herd of elephants ,deers ,bison and wildboars and plenty of birds.
waking up for the calls of birds are very unique .
Staffs are super friendly and well trained to attend guests especially in premium properties .There were many of them but i cant point out even a single complaint on anyone.
Team KTDC had proved once again their Quality.
And one more to the team I really feel proud to tell u that this is my 13th Business I had given u including my friends and family members , In which they all were satisfied by your service .
Keep it up KTDC

Totally unique nature experience- with some old time luxury!
You must arrive into the National Park entrance with at least 30-45 minutes before the boats are leaving to the Lake Palace (you'll be on a general tourist boat but with reserved seats that you don't need to book ahead of time) from the sister hotel inside the Park.
Arrive so you have time to get the boat that arrives lunchtime (lunch, dinner, and breakfast are included in the rate). On arrival, you'll go to your room, then to lunch., which is super tasty home cooking.
Staff is absolutely wonderful and helpful.
The views from the benches overlooking the lake are so lovely. There were always some animals grazing across the lake! We saw deer, many different kinds of birds, etc. The staff said the best time to see the animals is in dry season, March and April, I believe, but we were there in December and it was still excellent!
After lunch you can do another boat ride with the tourists that will come pick you up. Later there is tea and then a nice dinner before an early bedtime.
I woke up early and had a coffee and went down and sat by the lake on the boat pier, enjoying the literally thousands of birds chatting with each other.
After breakfast it's time to pack up. I would recommend next time doing 2 or 3 nights if you can afford it, and also trying to book ahead of time some of the individual nature tours that are offered at the boat launch near the sister hotel (some are hiking, some boats). Or, book 2 nights here and 1 night at the sister hotel! Anyway, totally recommended!
Oasis of calm
It is hard to describe Lake Palace without sounding gushing and using every superlative possible.
This gorgeous six bedroomed hotel is set on the lake in the middle of the Periyar tiger reserve and wildlife sanctuary. It was the summer retreat of Indian kings, maharajas and their guests. You access it by boat from the pier, it takes about ten /fifteen minutes and then you are in your own little piece of heaven.
The accommodation is so charming with furniture from a past era. It is full board and each and every meal was delicious and different, served with charm and humour...you certainly get to know all the team and they are each and everyone charming.
There is no WiFi or internet but when you are sitting watching the Langur monkeys leaping from tree to tree, Brahminy kites soaring above our heads, bison, wild boar and sambar deer, it makes you realise how much you do not need WiFi 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Instead go on the trek, we saw an Indian hornbill in flight and two malabar squirrels. Take the bamboo raft trip, although you have to walk for 5kms there before you get to the raft, so not for the faint hearted!!! On our last night of four, my friend and I had just come off the little boat trip that takes you up the lake when two of our fellow guests called saying elephants, elephants.
When we got to the garden view point , there they were...Mum, Dad, aunty and the little baby just wandering down from the forest to the Lake side to have a drink and a wash. The other animals on the lakeside moved away slightly showing respect to these beautiful and magnificent creatures. Even the staff were excited saying that to see a family come down together was really quite special.
We arrived back from the boat at five pm and we sat and watched them until the light had faded and we could no longer see them. However it is a memory that will stay with all of us for ever.
If you want a special place to spend a couple of nights, a week, a fortnight or longer then Lake Palace more than fits the bill.
enchanting three days at Lake palace Thekkady
My daughter and I were fortunate to get a three day stay at lake palace thekkady. We did not want to come back. The serenity beauty warmth and quiet of the place is unmatchable. wonderful that wi fi didn’t function. hope they remove the TV also. Its natural simple non intimidating and truly remarkable.

Excellent stay, happy with surrounding and hospitality
As there are only 6 Room at lake palace, we had done online booking well in advance from KTDC site. To reach to lake palace, you have to do check in at KTDC Aranya nivas resort, where staff will help you to get in to the boat to take you to Lake palace (15-20 mins ride by boat).
Staff at lake palace is very courteous, helpful, soft spoken. On arrival, Mr. Anish welcomed us. I must say Anish is a kind person and share all the possible information about surroundings. They serve Kerala authentic food which was very tasty. You can spot bison, deer, wild boar from the resort. Bird Chirping is clearly audible early morning, best experience to feel the nature. We also saw elephants during our periyar lake ride.
Must recommended place to spend at least a night.
Tranquil Resort with Spectacular Surroundings and Service
We returned to Lake Palace in early October after 13 years. When I booked the place I was worried that things may have changed and we would not have the same experience. I was pleasantly surprised. Lake Palace was as tranquil as I remembered. Seeing my family get re-acquainted with the place was like watching kids in a candy shop. It was heart warming. The staff has changed over the years but the quality has not. Pradeep, Anish and Anish (chef sunny) made our day. They were fun, enthusiastic and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the food and the hospitality. If you are looking for a quiet time ... off the grid .. where you know you will be treated like royalty I highly recommend Lake Palace.
Beautiful Location
We stayed in KTDC Lake Palace for a night. People booking KTDC Lake Palace should report at KTDC Aranya Nivas reception. There you complete checkin formalities and then you are transferred to Lake Palace in a boat which is around 15 minutes ride. Lake Palace is surrounded on three sides by water and connected to forest land on one side.
Rooms are good and well maintained. They provide you complimentary boat ride. Most of the view is restricted by trees. View is only available on one side which is opposite to Room no 44. You can spot sambar deers, Gaurs, Nilgiri Tahrs on the opposite side of water. Do remember to take your binoculars and zoom cameras if you want to see the movement in details.
Food is good. Staff is very courteous. The entire complex runs on generator as there is no direct electricity available here. There is no electric kettle in the room. However, they do provide you tea from hotel kitchen at as early as 6:15 am in morning which should be ok.
While the place is awesome and everything good, I found the price to be very high(15k per night) and does not justifies the value provided. I would price the location maximum at 7-8k INR. Its too costly with respect to value provided for a repeat visit.

Just Wonderful
We had a wonderful relaxing stay at the Lake Palace, within the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. We stayed for two nights and were the only couple there on the second night. The location is unique and only accessible by boat. The "Palace" is surrounded by water on three sides, with sanctuary's forest at the back. You can view the animals on the surrounding shores from the verandah and grounds of the Palace. It was so peaceful with the only sounds being the sounds of the forest!
The staff were fabulous and the rooms extremely comfortable, clean and spacious. There was no wifi when we were there due to recent difficulties with the service, which we felt was actually a bonus. All in all it was a wonderful life experience and one we will treasure.
Serene
It is a quaint resort in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary with limited access by steamer( complimentary). The rooms are excellent and well appointed. the resort has only 6 rooms, hence the staff is very friendly. The hotel has no wifi & networks are nonexistent, so you are literally cut off from outside. The food is excellent. There are no activities except the boat rides, so pack in a few books to while away the day, unless you are travelling with friends or relatives.
Superb
We stayed 2 nights in early September.
We parked our car at Aranya Nivas and were escorted by boat to Lake Palace for a sumptuous Kerala lunch.
Everything about the place is excellent - location, rooms, food, service. It was quite the splurge for us, but we were glad we did it.
Some practical info:
- no mobiles work there except BSNL and even BSNL data doesn't work
- one cannot do most of the forest activities when staying here since you are at the mercy of the sightseeing boats which ply every 2 hours to take you to and from the mainland
- the lake view room (44) has great views of the lake but the 2 rooms next to it also have partial lake views
Lovely but too expensive
We stayed 2 nights and only us there on the first night. The sounds are wonderful and the staff very attentive. The rooms are good but basic as you would expect onan island. We were joined by a noisy family on the second night who had no interest in nature and scared the wildlife away. Not much staff could do about that but be warned noisy neighbours could spoil your visit. You are paying for the location and if you don’t get the peace, your money may well be wasted.

Lake Palace stay - June 25th - June 28th
One of the best places to visit and stay in Kerala, Lake palace was always on my bucket list and finally i made it with my family this summer. The staff(Anish, Rajesh, Altaf and Shiju) were all outstanding. My mom had difficulty in climbing up(108 steps) and these guys made her feel at home.
The food was authentic south indian and were homely. All 3 nights and four days we stayed, we never had any problem with the quality of food or the service rendered. The rice puttu with kadala curry and appam with egg curry and stu wer great, but the idli on the final day breakfast was simply OUTSTANDING.
I've made up my mind to make it to Lake Palace every year.
KTDC proves that they are the BEST in taking care of customer satisfaction..
Hoping to visit again next year same time around.
A dollop of heaven set amidst a paradise-like scenery
It all can be summed upto location and service. This is truly a Palace set amdist the lake where the guests are treated like royalty.
We booked via KTDC online (it gives 10% discount) and took 2 rooms for 2 nights in May 2018..We drove from Kochi and it took us 6 hours (8am to 1:30pm) with frequent pit stops (my four-year old couldnt stomach the bendy roads)..Once we reached Thekkady, we drove on inside the Sanctuary following the signage for KTDC Periyar House.
You get stopped at the gate & once u show them the booking voucher for Lake Palace they let u through (pay for the vehicle & all passengers - ticket valid for only a day but since we didnt exit the sanctuary we took the ticket just once for our trip which was at the time we entered). There is a small Lake Palace Reception outside KTDC Aaranyam. From here, KTDC people will escort you and your luggage to the boat (remember, the boats run only on particular times) that takes u to the Lake Palace. On the boat, the first few seats on the top deck (covered) are reserved for LP guests (the boat is well-run and equipped with life jackets, even a small sized one for my son)..it take 20-25min to reach LP and the ride itself is pure joy. Once u deboard, there is a set of steep steps to take u upto the LP.
The rooms itself are spacious (they have only a handful of rooms-one of our rooms was a suite with a small living room) with antique furniture & decor and a private portico (corner rooms have more privacy). The washrooms are ultra-modern with fine toiletries. Food is simple, home-style and served in their lavish dining room (not buffet style but served for each group) and can be cooked according to your taste (the staff was kind enough to procure some local delicacies upon our request). The lawns are well kept and the outdoor lounge chairs/ benches are well placed to give one vantage views of the lake & the wildlife beyond.
The best part is the service-par excellence. Mr. Saji is a treasure trove of info and was quite helpful during our stay.
Tips:
1) In our case, we missed the 1:30pm boat & so we had our lunch at Aaranyam (not good at all) and then took the 3pm boat..I recommend to be at LP reception to take the first boat so u can enjoy LP fully and have all ur meals at LP (which is anyway included in the LP package).
2) The package also includes a boat ride per day-so inform the LP staff of ur preferred time so that they keep the top deck seats reserved.
3) All the windows in the room are boarded shut with no AC-so it can get a little musty.
4) The room lights are very dim.
5) Cell phone reception & wifi can be dodgy.
Overall, this is a place to be experienced and cherished..Kudos Team KTDC
Excellent Location !!
This was a unique experience because of the location. Surrounded 3 sides by lake and you can see animals in natural habitat just on the opposite bank of the lake.
Staffs are very friendly and food is awesome !! They treat you like maharaja.
Rooms are traditional with nice modern bathroom.
Things to remember: You will not have any mobile signal unless you have BSNL connection.
I was told, recently there were some restrictions put in place by forest department and Wifi was also not available.
Suggestion for Lake Palace KTDC: Please put electric kettle & Teabags at rooms so that guest can make their own, those who are early risers. Breakfast/Tea from kitchen starts at 7 AM only.
