A Visceral Narrative Voice Delivering Uncommon Wisdom Unapologetically flipping common stereotypes of both the gay and black experience in America, this is a bold and touching story of loyalty, acceptance and the power of family, both chosen and otherwise. GJ's narrative voice is consistent and curious, revealing an insightful young man who learns about masculinity and friendship through an osmotic movement through community. The relationship he has with his father is touching and beautifully told, but his more contentious connection with the hard-edged NapPo is just as revealing in terms of who GJ hopes to become in the world. It is shamefully rare for a novel to delve into such intimate detail of a black teenager's life, while the added layers of cultural complexity give this novel a rich and confessional feel. The prose is immersive, the tense moments of conflict are unflinching, and the dialogue crackles with authenticity, as though torn from a transcript of raised voices over auntie's dinner table. Over the course of the book, we watch GJ transform from a wistfully sad child with a low-key identity crises into a confident and marriageable figure in Philadelphia's gay scene. Imbued with hope and valuable lessons about self-knowledge, this is a well-crafted commentary on the broad spectrums of maturity and masculinity.

An “unusual” story This book tells us about the story of an African American boy who finally tries to face a “reality” that in previous years was a taboo, something that finally could not be “accepted” but thanks to the compassion of his father and the love that his father gave him, he was able to have an evolution towards the acceptance of himself. Despite the situation of his mother appearing and disappearing, he was a young man who throughout his life faced very strong challenges from bullying to acceptance of his sexuality. This book offers a unique look at racial, sexual, family identity and breaking stereotypes.

Your Next Read This book is everything you would want in a literary fiction book. It was moving and inspiring. I felt for the characters and everything they had to go through.In my opinion, this is a book that everyone should read. It shows you the depths in which Black Middle-class people had to go through in the 1950s. Samuel is a dedicated father who would do anything for his kids.One of my favorite parts of the book is how he talks about his father. How his mother would be away for long periods, and he looked forward to being with his dad. Which, is not something that men usually had to deal with in the 1950's.I also really enjoyed the LGBTQ representation in this book. How Samuel knew his son was Gay and the way that he handled everything was remarkable.Overall, pick this book up for your next read.
