After 4 lovely visits the 5th, a Sunday lunch, was rather substandard in terms of service
Whilst one could find some level of upselling acceptable, this time the extent was rather a bit too much and irritating.
Further a 12% tip was added to the bill, without any prior indication that this will be done. On enquiry the staff indicated that it was noted in the wine tasting menu. Unfortunately we had lunch so no indication in the menu they had presented to us. When the bill was presented it also asked for a tip in the normal manner, so I nearly added the customary 10%. It was a bit of surprise to see the 12% already added.

Hi Werner,
Thank you for the feedback. We’re sorry the upselling felt overwhelming and the unexpected tip added confusion. We’ll work on clearer communication about upsells and tipping.

Very friendly staff and a nice setting, but very underwhelming food. Thai fishcakes were very oily, too fine in texture, and had no flavour, apart from being very fishy. I also found a fishbone in my first one. Could not stomach the second one....Does not work with a runny and very skimpy hollandaise. Sparkling chenin very mediocre. I am disappointed.

Fantastic place for a visit. Excellent menu and very good wine selection. This is a winery to visit when travelling to Cape Town

Good quality products
I don’t understand this place. Great food, and great location, but they have this absurd rule that you cannot eat and do a wine tasting at the same table. We were sitting outside, and initially only wanted to do a wine tasting, but eventually got hungry so asked to see the menu. When we ordered food, they made us get up, walk two meters to our right, sit at another table to eat, and then walk two meters back to our original table to finish our wine tasting. At the end of the afternoon, both our lunch and the wine tasting (and the wine that we bought to take home) was on the same bill... Senseless, and enough to put me off ever taking anyone there again (I’ve subsequently told this story to several people living in the Durbanville area, and many of them recounted a similar experience at the place).
I have been a loyal supporter of Groot Phesantekraal for a long time, and I’ve always had wonderful experiences here—whether dropping in for a wine tasting, breakfast, or lunch.
However, as the farm’s popularity has grown, I’ve noticed a decline in both the level of knowledge and the overall quality of service. During my last two visits, the wine tasting felt rushed and underwhelming; I actually had to prompt the staff to explain and introduce the wines we were tasting, which was never the case previously.
Similarly, during our lunch visit this past weekend, we had to send a dish back for the first time. While we fully understand it was meant to be served cold, there is a clear difference between a chilled dish and one that feels like it was just taken straight out of a deep freeze. To add to this, we experienced a very long delay with our lunch and had to inquire twice about our food before eventually asking to speak with a manager—and we were only a small table of three.
We choose Groot Phesantekraal because we’re accustomed to knowledgeable staff, premium service, and excellent food, which justifies the premium price point. If we wanted an average experience, we could visit any standard wine farm, but we have always held you to a higher standard.
Please accept this as constructive criticism. I share this as a loyal guest who loves what Groot Phesantekraal represents and truly hopes to see the service return to the high standard we’ve come to know and love.
