For all intents and purposes, First County Bank charges $10 to close out CDs and Savings accounts
First County Bank had very competitive CD rates in 2024 so I opened up 4 CDs with varying maturity dates at First County. I also opened up CDs at other local banks including Bankwell and DR Bank. A number of my CDs at the other banks have matured already, and my first First County CD matured yesterday.
I tried to close my matured First County CD, and I was told that they were going to charge me a $10 fee for the bank check used to close the account. (So I would be charged a total of $40 for my 4 CDs). Neither Bankwell nor DR bank charges their customers fees to close their accounts. Even Citibank doesn’t charge for this.
So theoretically, if your child deposits her $100 birthday money into a First County account, whenever she decides to close the account, she will be charged $10 (if she’s issued a bank check.)
I understand that banks charge their customers a fee to issue a bank check for their customers’ use (to buy a car, etc.) In First County’s case, First County is charging the customer a fee for First County’s own use of the bank check (to close out their customer’s account).
This is not a First County rant: their rates are competitive, and their CSRs are polite. I am posting this to give potential customers a heads’ up about their unusual account closure fee.

Notary
I needed to get a court document notarized and was sent to this location, because the notary at my usual bank (on high ridge)was not in. The teller was nice enough to call ahead to make sure the notary was in and what I needed. When I got to this bank (on summer street) another man was in the bank manager's office and came out and asked what I needed. I explained my situation and he went back into the managers office with my document. He kept coming back and forth to ask me information. He finally said that they could not help me. I asked why when I had the same document notarized before at another bank a few months ago, and that the other bank called ahead. He did not give me an explanation and just handed me back my documents and walked into a back room. The bank manager never bothered to speak with me, and I felt totally disrespected. I have numerous accounts with this bank and am now questioning if I want to be a customer of theirs. Would give a zero rating if I could!

First County Bank
So just for some insight into whats going on in my situation i have had an an account with First County Bank since i was 17 (im now 26). I have been a loyal customer of theirs. Just last month i got into a car accident and my car was deemed a total loss. The car was in my fathers name because at the time i bought it i had no credit (i was 20 years old). So the check was issued under my fathers name. I called the bank to ask how do i got about depositing the check. They told me all i had to do was have my father sign it and i sign under his name and im good to go. I did just that and went to the branch closest to my job at prospect street in Stamford. When i arrived the lady told me i couldnt deposit the check that i had to have my father deposit into his bank account and then give me a check to deposit into my account. I thought that was strange. So i called the shippan ave branch in Stamford where i opened my account originally to get an understanding of whats going on and they hung up on me. I proceeded to go to said branch to speak to a manager to see what going on. When i arrived i asked if i can have my father come in and show his id to deposit the check because to me it seems they think its a fake check. I was told to sit and wait to speak to a manager. As im waiting a gentleman came up to me and asked to see the check, i gave it to him but i told him again that i wanted to speak to the manager. He tells me shes busy and just wants to see the check right now. At this point im very frustrated. From the chair where i was sitting i heard the manager in her office saying that there nothing she can do for me that if i want my dad can open an account and deposit the check and wait the 30 days for it to clear and then transfer to my account in a very condescending way. I felt a lack of care for a loyal customer from the employees and personally a little humiliated that i have to jump through hoops to get my money to purchase a new vehicle. I have been renting and its not cheap so i wanted to get a car as soon as possible. I probably wont be using this bank anymore going forward. Such a horrible experience and I recommend anyone looking to open an account stay clear of this bank.

I was helped by Mohammed who first handled my questions over the phone, then handled my transaction with a smile and professionalism in person. Great service.

Hi Sara! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a kind review for the Summer Street branch. Much appreciated!
I have been a customer for over thirty years and was very surprised to learn that your bank does not accept coins in the machine starting at 3 ;00. I have not been notified by First county about this policy and there is no signage in the bank until you go to the machine and see it on top of the machine at 3:00 o'clock ??? I got into the bank at 3:10 , I rushed there from work with my grand daughters coins I promised I would change for her knowing the bank is open for 50 more minutes should'nt be a problem you would think. I know this is not a big issue but just another problem with First county bank. The people working there where very professional and nice they where just doing there job but I cant help feeling with almost a hour more till closing I could have been accommodated. Thank you
I felt judged and unwelcome when I visited this location to cash a check. The staff’s attitude was noticeably different compared to other branches. I went to the Prospect Street location right after and had a smooth, respectful experience without any issues.

Hello Don,
We are pleased to hear that our Prospect Street branch was able to assist with cashing your check. It is very important that we confirm the identity of those who are conducting transactions at First County Bank, and therefore we do require two forms of identification for non-customers when cashing a check.
We hope you understand that our Tellers must adhere to these procedures. Thank you for providing us feedback.

Hi Oksana,
Our Prospect Street branch is a drive-up only location, where in-branch service is unavailable. The closest branch to our Prospect Street location that offers in-branch service would be our Summer Street location.
Thank you,
First County Bank

Called to ask a question. Transferred me to a location that's closed. I called back. They transferred me again. I called back. They hung up on me. I called back. They hung up on me again. I didn't even get a chance to ask my question. Sorry for bothering you?
