Today, we visited the restaurant to celebrate my friend's birthday; however, prior to dinner, we enjoyed a substantial lunch. The majority of our group consists of individuals aged 70 to 80 years. We ordered three dishes: a large soup, a vegetable dish, and a whole Peking duck. One of the waitresses displayed an inappropriate attitude, questioning why we ordered only three dishes. She continued to circulate around the restaurant while ridiculing us. Additionally, the portion of the duck appeared to be only half a serving. In total, we paid $145, which included tax and gratuity. All of us from california. Bad experience
This used to be our family's go to dim sum place for the last 20 years, and my parents have been going for even years before that. We hadn't gone in while and were looking forward to some family brunch, but we were met with an unpleasant surprise in the parking lot. I guess they recently started a valet system where 2/3s of the parking lot is reserved for valet only. No other businesses in this lot are open on Sundays so they effectively had the whole parking lot to themselves yet still charged for parking. The attendants were rude and rushing us to hand over our keys, but we decided to leave and go elsewhere. Even if valet parking was only $5 or tip based, the rudeness of the staff alone was enough for us to decide to go elsewhere.
Very crowded, and like some other reviews said, it can get hectic. You definitely want to get there early, or there will be a long wait. Also, being able to speak Chinese is very helpful in communicating with servers and people pushing carts. The servers kept a close eye on the table at all times to take plates away or refill tea.
For the food itself, I didn’t get to try everything, but everything I ate was good, with a few exceptional items, and one item that was a little mediocre.
The exceptional: fried salt and pepper squid, green beans. I really enjoyed the green beans especially, and you can tell they treat their vegetables very well. I would guess they twice cook it like potatoes, boiling and then frying, probably in salt water and then finishing with more salt after the fry while it’s hot. The salt really penetrated the green beans and made it so flavorful. Texture and taste were on point, and surprisingly the vegetable was my #1.
Honorable mentions go to har gow dumplings and the Chinese broccoli, which were both just as exceptional, but just less as good as the green beans.
The chicken feet were pretty good. Boiled to death so that the feet were very tender and gelatinous enough to fall off the cartilage and bone easily and you didn’t have to fight with it to pick off the meat. Definitely a decent spot to try them for the first time if you haven’t.
The worst item was the sticky fried rice, ate more like a glutinous rice that should’ve probably been wrapped in lotus leaf, and was just under seasoned and not as flavorful, while also lacking that wok hey. Too starchy, and probably wrong type of grains I prefer for fried rice.
I’ve only been for brunch on Sundays. Between Valet line and line to get a table, It’s so hectic. Whole time you’re dining you’re trying to keep your head at the table and in conversation but instead distracted by the fact you have to keep a constant eye of the carts to have to flag down. The carts are a cute idea, but not so great in practice.
The food appeared to be pre-prepared rather than freshly made, and the portion sizes were extremely small. Prices were significantly higher than the average market prices in Houston, which made the overall value quite disappointing.
In addition, there was essentially no table service during the meal. At checkout, a staff member stood next to me while I was entering the tip, which made the experience uncomfortable. Overall, this did not feel like a service-oriented or customer-friendly dining experience.
We came to Fung’s Kitchen for the Dim Sum carts. We sat down expecting great service from the previous reviews and end leaving very disappointed. The whole time we were sat at the table none of the cart people stopped at our table and the food that we managed to get was cold and subpar at best.
