This excursion, while interesting and enjoyable as an outing, was missing a little something. Its basically a night walk on paths in a small area of forest. We saw some frogs, sleeping birds and even a sloth which was pretty cool. But the guide seemed to have a script of items he wanted to get through rather than a knowledge base that he shared organically in relation to what we were seeing. It seemed contrived. The home its based out of, however, is gorgeous with a breathtaking view and a delicious dinner.
We did three in one tour today with our amazing guide Yara. Arenal, Lafortuna and hanging bridges. I can’t praise our guide and the driver enough. She was absolutely passionate about the tour and went out of her way and we were able to see monkeys, anteater, snake etc. We even saw a sloth thanks to our driver. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and care for us made the tour SO worth it. Thank you.
Our guide Josue and driver Steven took us on a great bird tour in a local park. This was our fifth visit to Costa Rica and they still found new birds for us to see. Definitely recommend their service for birders.
We took the Cano Negro boat tour today with Ecoterra tours. Our guide Yara, our driver Mario and our boat captain Augusto were excellent! They were extremely knowledgeable and pointed out so many different types of wildlife! Thank you for making our trip so memorable!
We did a night hike with dinner. Our guide Robert was great - very informative about the wildlife and took great care of us. Those at the house were very nice and the food was yummy. We saw lots of animals (different species of frogs and toads, insects, sloths, birds).
I can’t say enough good things about Ecoterra, I am so glad I decided to go with them for our vacation!
Planning: First off- I never go with travel agencies or tours, I typically plan everything myself, but this was my first time in Central America, so I decided to get assistance. Jordy with Ecoterra planned everything so perfectly, tours, transportation, hotels, and it was all seamless and easy, and I was able to be in contact with him if there was any issue. Jordy- thank you so much!
Guides: As for the tours, the guides made them so special, each and everyone of them was amazing. We had Yara for multiple tours and she seriously made the trips like it was just hiking with a local friend who knows everything about the place. She knew I wanted to see an eyelash viper and TWO! Yara- you’re the best and thank you for all the pictures! Mianor was super fun and knowledgeable on the Arenal tour, and really connecting people with the tragedy that had happened there, and respecting the area, but also admiring the beauty.
Shout out to the drivers (Waldin, Jonathan, the rest who I’m sorry I didn’t get all your names)! You guys made transportation so easy and they were great (with the traffic so glad I didn’t rent a car and try to drive us around).
Trips we did that I definitely recommend- Laguna Lodge in Tortuguero, and in La Fontuna Casa Luna, Paradise Hot Springs, Mystic Park Hanging Bridges, North Fields Chocolate & Coffee, Rio Celeste, Arenal Volcano.
I also love that they partner with local families and support the community, and it was really helpful that they are bilingual because I only speak like 10 words in Spanish (I tried).

Very good tour with Yada and excellent driver David. Highly recommend. Personable and even tho it was only the two of us going on the nature hike Yada gave it 100%.
Over the last few days we have done the Botánica Gardens tour in La Tigra with Rebecca and Alejandro, and the Arenal Volvano walk and La Fortuna waterfall tour with Albert.
Both have been amazing!! The guides are all so passionate and knowledgeable.

Les contactamos para visitar la catarata fortuna, 2 adultos + 1 niño. Les escribimos por whatsapp advirtiendo muy claro que nosotros teníamos nuestro coche y llegaríamos al parking directamente. En lugar de advertirnos de que la visita en si no precisa de guia para nada, se callaron y con tal de vendernos les pagamos las entradas. Entiendo que esto esta enfocado para clientes que les recogen en su hotel les llevan y les devuelven pero en nuestro caso no. Fue el colmo de lo absurdo, llegamos al parking y allá estaba el guia esperándonos, llegó un mini bus sin gente (se ve que éramos los únicos que contratamos esa excursión ese día) que nos dio 3 toallas, 2 botellas de agua y 3 mini bolsas de piña seca tipo snack. El bus se fue y el guia nos sacó las entradas y nos acompañó a bajar los 500 escalones y nos dijo 3 cosas contadas del lugar ( no hay mas que contar). Al menos nos vigiló las mochilas mientras nos tomamos unas fotos
Resumen, pagamos 158$ cuando hubiéramos pagado 40$ (entrada cuesta 20$ y niños gratis)
Al menos no les contratamos la excursión al mirador del silencio pues hubiera sido más de lo mismo (entrada cuesta 10$)

We just came back from a vacation in the wonderful rain forest of La Fortuna Costa Rica. We were picked up at our hotel Tabacon Resort and Spa by Ecoterra Tours for a tour of the hanging bridges and the Fortuna waterfalls. Our guide was Jocsan; what a delight of guide, full of knowledge, very friendly and professional. He explained everything to us in a very simple and super enjoyable way, allowed us to take our time and enjoy every plant and animal we encountered, and helped us out taking photos. Yocsan made our tour lots of fun and very interesting. Ecoterra tours should be proud to have such a good guide. If you are in La Fortuna, we highly recommend this tour company and Yocsan as your tour guide.

Stay away from Ecoterra Costa Rica by all means.
Booking experience with Ecoterra Costa Rica was horrible. I was in Nicaragua and after I booked & paid one of their tours via one of their main booking channels, the Ecoterra Costa Rica administrator contacted me, claiming that the minimum requirement for the tour to commence is 2 participants, and I was required to pay for the fee of one more person if I want the trip to take place. It’s shoulder season, and business is low, I totally understand it, hence I agreed and I informed the administrator that I will pay the extra fee in Nicaraguan Cordoba in cash upon the pick up. Then nothing happened. No show from Ecoterra Costa Rica on the tour date. Mind you, there was no information about the minium requirement for 2 participants shown on the listing. All the demand for extra money took place after I booked, paid and received tour confirmation. The tour remained confirmed till I reached out to the booking channel to inform them NO SHOW from Ecoterra Costa Rica.

CAÑO NEGRO RIVER TOUR RIO FRIO | Samuel was an amazing tour guide! And we loved this tour! Well worth the drive up to this area. We saw all sorts of monkeys — all three species in fact. And the boat captain did amazing keeping us safe but getting as close as we could to the wildlife. In addition to monkeys we saw the local crocodile species, toucans, bats, and many other birds. We learned a ton, and saw everything we wanted and more. It was relaxing, beautiful, and full of sights. Highly recommend this tour, and loved the lunch after as well as the delicious chocolate experience. Thank you again, Samuel! And thank you for keeping us safe on the drive, Wilbert! Truly wonderful!

Allen and Jose took us to Bribri where we learned about the native cultures, medicinal herbs, and how to make chocolate. Allen's knowledge of the local flora and fauna exceeded expectations. He knew where every bug, frog, fish, and lizard was hiding. Jose got us to where we needed to be safely and was incredibly patient with us. Both made us feel like old friends.

This was such a fascinating and unique experience! We did the Venado Caves Underground Tour from La Fortuna, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The caves are absolutely beautiful and full of adventure. We crawled through tight spaces (optional, but highly recommended!) and learned so much from our knowledgeable guide. It’s not for the claustrophobic, but they do offer alternate paths, which is thoughtful.
They provide rain boots on-site, which is super convenient, but definitely bring your own socks. Just know: your feet will get soaked—those boots are wide at the top, so water splashes in and they get a little heavy. Still worth it. I’d also recommend leggings, long sleeves, and water-resistant shoes if you skip the boots.
Afterward, there are showers on site and they provide towels and a delicious fruit platter. Bring a change of clothes in a bag and a waterproof lanyard for your phone if you want pics!
The only downside? After the tour, my friend and I just wanted a hot cup of black coffee. It was $3 total, but they wouldn’t run our card for that amount, and the whole ordeal to get change turned into a weird hassle. A simple “cash only” sign or minimum card charge option would've helped. Honestly, it was frustrating but that aside, the tour itself was absolutely worth it!
