So sorry I had Clarkstown Heating & Air install my new A/C 3 yrs ago - it was a great local company then with excellent service. I did the yearly maintenance contract with them first 2 yrs too. Now they've been bought up by a larger company and all they're offering is a huge whole house service contract for hundreds of dollars. They still service A/C systems, but everything is 'a la carte' - you pay for them to come (period) and then they give you a quote for the price. Last Spring their tech did the maintenance, and didn't clean all the filters. When I asked, I was poo-poo'd, it didn't need to be done. Last August, I had water leaking into my living room because the system froze up because the filters were dirty. Time to find a new company.

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for sharing your experience—we truly appreciate your feedback, especially as a longtime Clarkstown customer.

We understand that changes like an acquisition can feel frustrating, particularly when you’ve had positive experiences in the past. Our goal with bringing Clarkstown into the Universe family is to maintain the same level of trusted, local service while expanding the resources, availability, and support behind it—not to lose what made it great.

That said, we’re very sorry to hear about your recent experience. The concerns you raised around the maintenance visit—especially the filters not being fully addressed and how that was handled—are not reflective of the standard we expect from our team. Preventative maintenance is meant to help avoid exactly the kind of issue you experienced, and we understand why that would be frustrating.

We also hear your feedback regarding our service options and pricing structure. We aim to provide flexible solutions for homeowners, but we never want that to come across as impersonal or misaligned with what our longtime customers have come to expect.

We would appreciate the opportunity to look into your service history and make this right. Please reach out to our office and ask to speak with a service manager so we can review what happened and work toward a resolution.

Thank you again for your honesty—it helps us improve and better serve customers like you. We truly do value you as a customer!

I recently had the ‘flu damper’ on my home boiler replaced. I must say that your technicians were courteous, professional and seemed knowledgeable. I was also happy that I was able to receive service on the same day as my call. My concern however is the $1,300.00 that The Company charged for this service which perhaps took a little more than thirty minutes. I do realize that technical service is expensive, and that I should have questioned more at the time, but I do feel that the amount I paid was extremely excessive. In closing, Robert and his associate are a credit to the The Company, but in the future I will hesitate to choose or recommend Clarkstown Heating and Air Conditioning for any home heating or cooling needs.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us—we truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback.

We’re glad to hear that Robert and his associate provided courteous, professional service and that we were able to respond quickly when you needed us. We’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to them, as they take great pride in the work they do.

We also understand your concerns regarding the cost of the repair. While the time on-site may have been relatively short, our pricing reflects more than just labor—it includes the technician’s training and expertise, the cost of maintaining fully stocked service vehicles, the availability of same-day service, and ensuring the repair is completed safely and correctly with warranty-backed work. That said, we never want a customer to feel caught off guard, and we appreciate your honesty in sharing how this felt from your perspective.

Your feedback is important to us, and we’d welcome the opportunity to review your service in more detail and ensure everything was clearly communicated. If you’re open to it, please reach out to our office and ask to speak with a service manager—we’d be happy to take a closer look.

Thank you again for your feedback and for recognizing our team.

False advertising, dont use Just boiggt a new house. Their website advertised free estimates. Then when they came to my house they charge me $200 because they "looked at my furnace for 5 minutes" Clearly they dont offer free estimates but falsely advertise that they do. Dont use this company.

The technician, Anthony Hanratty, did an excellent job of diagnosing my heating problem and fixing it. He adjusted the boiler temperature and allowed the heating system to bring the room temperature to a level that matched the thermostat setting, which had been the original problem. His approach was very professional and he explained his procedure in a step by step manner that was clear and easy to understand. Thanks Anthony for a job well done.

Avoid at all costs!! Clarkstown was recently acquired by some Long Island company and their prices are now 6-8x what other companies are charging. I was quoted $2400 for 1-2 hrs of work. Anyway I called another local company and they got it done in 1.5 hours for $325+ $80 in parts. Below is a link to a Reddit post I made about the estimate corroborating how outrageous it was. https://www.reddit.com/r/hvacadvice/s/HnoQGXvVFn

I had a problem with my heating unit. The technician came and told me it was a Honewell Zone valve which was not working. He replaced the zone valve and spent in total 45 minutes to fix the issue. The valve costs $57 on Amazon and I was charged $719 including tax. It was a total rip off. Clarkstown Heating has replaced 3 of my Air condition Units, Heating boiler and the water heater. I have been a loyal customer of their business and I get ripped off. I will never use them again. I just realized they are under new management. I don't trust them and will never use them.

Highly overpriced. We immediately got quotes and comparable companies were half of what Clarkstown quoted us. They used to be good before the merger with Universe.

We were quoted more than 2x vs other companies for a boiler transformer replacement. Also charged $160 for a 5 minute visit as a “dispatch fee”. Very disappointing especially since we have used Clarkstown for our HVAC issues in the past.

Buyer beware, outrageous price gouging We had used these guys in the past and we found their employees to be knowledgeable and their prices to be competitive. This week our boiler stopped working and we had one of their techs come out and take a look, turns out we needed to replace a thermocouple and a release valve. Their guy proceeded to give us a quote that almost made me spit out my coffee, the tech quoted us almost $2,200 dollars! Neither of those jobs are particularly difficult enough to warrant that outrageous a price. We ended up calling someone else and they ended up doing both jobs for $350 and were in and out in just over and hour. This company has turned to price gouging to try and take advantage of customers who are in a bad spot during the winter time, stay away from them.

Called for an emergency service, proceeded to charge flat fee of $700 to replace a "dead" smart thermostat with a digital programmable one with work done well within half an hour.

I’ve used this company before, few years ago, that’s why I called them. I needed a relay switch for furnace. The part cost $350 the tech, who was very nice, was here 1/2 hour, the bill came to 1,700. They told my sone, who was there to meet the tech, they’ll cut the price to $1,200 if we purchase the $500 maintenance package. When I called to get an itemized bill they told me they don’t do that it’s a flat rate!!

Clarkstown recently installed a new boiler for my Church at our parsonage. I was very impressed with the quality of the installation. The technicians solder joints were perfect, the piping polished and the routing for zones laid out well for ergonomics and maintenance. All of my expectations were met.

Overpriced and not reasonable. We had parts under warranty and got charged over $1k for a little over an hour of labor. We had to keep calling the office to follow up on scheduling the service, first they had to check if the parts were available, another call they couldn't reach their service department to see when they're available and they would call back, which they did not. Of note, the tech himself, Brian, was amazing, polite, and nice. I would recommend him if he ever worked outside of this company. He tried to call and see if they could lower the price for a maintenance membership fee and when he called the office he received a flat out no. The office didn't even try to look into it or anything, it was just NO. Overall, this Clarkstown/Universe is not here to work with customers, they are just here to get the money. They could not give a detailed receipt of what is done, they basically work out of a flat fee or whatever they want to charge.

I normally don’t write reviews, but I felt this one needed to be shared. About five years ago, I had a central A/C system and a mini split installed in my home. The installation went smoothly, and everything worked great at first. The following summer, however, my A/C started blowing warm air. I scheduled a service call, which cost $180. The technician tested the system and found it was 4 pounds low on refrigerant—even though the system was only a year old and should have had 8 pounds total. They added dye to check for a leak and returned a week later but found nothing. I was charged again to add the missing refrigerant. After some discussion, the company did the right thing and offered a discount, which I appreciated at the time. Fast forward to today, my mini split (now five years old) still works fine, but I noticed mold growing in the fan—something I’ve since learned is common. I called to schedule a cleaning, and was told I’d first need to pay $180 for someone to come out and “assess” the cleaning needs. Then, I’d have to schedule another appointment for the actual cleaning, which starts at $399 per unit. They also informed me the $180 assessment fee would not be applied to the cleaning service. All I wanted was for someone to come out and clean the unit—I’m not having any performance issues, just concerned about the mold. Unfortunately, the process and pricing felt like more of a cash grab than customer care. It’s disappointing to see how differently the company treats customers after the initial install is complete.
