Don’t make our mistake - Avoid CareGard
Don’t make our mistake. Avoid CareGard and dealerships that sell cars with their certified pre-owned warranties.
We purchased a pre-owned 2016 KIA Sorrento in Dec of 2023 which came with a CareGard 2-yr Powertrain train warranty. The car ran great for 10 months. We serviced the car regularly including professional oil changes on schedule as did the previous owner. Occasionally we had to top off small qty of oil in between changes.
While driving on the highway Sep 2024, then engine suddenly lost power and ultimately seized on the side of the highway. There was no check engine or warning lights preceding the failure. The authorized mechanic saw signs of significant oil burn in the engine and very little oil left in the pan. The engine is needing replacement at a cost of at least $13K.
We opened a claim with CareGard on September 16 and our mechanic spoke with them. Weeks went by with no response from CareGard about our inquiries about the claim. After 2 months of no response, I explained our frustration to the car dealer who then called a senior manager at CareGard. He took the claim number. Two days later we received our first notice from CareGard: claim denied due to improper maintenance.
On Dec 10, we had an attorney send CareGard a letter indicating we did provide proper maintenance, with copies of receipts of proper on-schedule oil-changes for the last 15K miles. We did receive a call around 10 days later from CareGard, that they had received. Our attorney played phone tag for another couple of weeks to find out the status, and he was told it is being re-considered.
It is now end of January, 4 months into the claim. Without use of this KIA, we have incurred rental car costs and legal costs trying to get this vehicle repaired. If anyone has had better luck getting CareGard to properly respond and cover their claims, please reply.
Unless you want this kind of deny and delay treatment, go elsewhere for a warranty.
We had Care Guard Security refurbish an old alarm in our previous house over 15 years ago (at a fraction of the cost quoted by a very large company). When we recently moved house, the old alarm was defunct and we asked them to install a completely new alarm for us. They are a small company that is great to do business with and have always proved honest and reliable. We tried to do business with a so called "industry leading" alarm co and let's just say that I would not have given that particular company even one star in any category. I have learnt to look for smaller companies that care and Care Guard is a shining example of one.
