This guy just doesn’t care
This doc is not remotely interested in helping or diagnosing anything that he can’t read off a blood test. He’s condescending, he doesn’t listen, and he doesn’t seem to care. His staff is great - but he keeps running off his female PAs. Avoid him for anything other than blood pressure meds - it’s the only thing he cares about. Even getting rx refills is a constant battle with him not consenting to refilling routine meds.

Always a great experience! I never feel rushed by the doctor — he spends time to actually LISTEN to me. The staff is fantastic, too. Highly recommend Avalon!
I showed up for my lab appt (8:45am) at 8:54 am (9 min after my appt time) due to hitting traffic lights nonstop. While we were talking at the front desk, it hit 10 minutes.
Apparently policy is 10 min or more they count it as a missed appt. They wouldn’t see me for a lab draw that probably would’ve taken like 2 minutes min.
Absolutely amazing Doctor and All staff! So friendly and caring! I really recommend Dr. Finnila to everyone I know now. If you are wanting a doctor that doesn’t dismiss your symptoms and concerns and really cares, Avalon Family care is for you!
Some of the office staff were nice but I definitely had more than one bad experience here. It was time for a yearly checkup and I called 2-3 times and was told I would get a call back to make an appointment and never received a call. I felt like I was judged which is an awful feeling when it’s your doctor!! I also have a issue where I faint when I have blood drawn and they do labs in office so after my 2nd episode the next time I was sent somewhere else to have it drawn way to make your patient feel like they can trust you!! I also feel like they are not experienced enough. I’m leaving 1 star because of how nice the receptionists was if it wasn’t for her it would be zero!! All about money and don’t care about the patient. Edit: Oh completely forgot about not being able to get a referral because I haven’t been in the office for awhile but as I said I got told three times I would be called back for an appointment. Just pass on this one in my opinion. I was hoping this would workout but unfortunately it did not.
Health Care? I think not, Lack of care is a better description. Will not call in meds without in person visits all though they say they have telemedicine. Not ADA friendly and uninformed Doctor running this aesthetics clinic.
Disappointed
I am disappointed with my experience with Avalon in May 2024. My issue is that I went in for my yearly physical, as I had done the previous year. My understanding was that there would be no charge per the norm. After the fact, I am told they no longer accept my insurance. They should have notified me prior to my visit as they had all of my insurance information. Now, they want me to pay for the physical, and they have sent it to a collection agency. It seems obvious that they knew what they were doing, and simply hoped to collect for the visit.

This has to be the most money hungry doctor’s office I have ever come across. They schedule countless futile appointments (genuinely, they make you schedule an appointment for EVERYTHING, including just wanting medication for a stomach virus, even when you can’t get an appointment until AFTER the bug has passed) and it is absolutely ridiculous. Then they hit you with copays weeks later that they never asked for, and have the nerve to refuse seeing you if you don’t pay then and there. And they can’t way to send your bills to collections! It’s as if they expect everyone to be walking around with frivolous money to spend. Encounters with the actual doctor, while rare, could easily be compared to talking to a brick wall. Have fun advocating for yourself because he does not listen. Asking for a referral is like asking for an arm and a leg. If there is another doctor’s office that accepts your insurance, save yourself the headache and go there.
They are money hungry. They want to charge me for a bill from early 2024 but didn't tell me. I paid my copay for the visit in July; they tell me that went to the bill from 2024, and I need to pay for the visit again. I called about the bill, and no one could tell me what the bill was for. I got three different reasons I was charged for their mistake in 2024.
If you are a new patient and making an appointment for wellness appointment you should check their rule that they will submit your billing to insurance as a medical/office visit instead of wellness visit. This can result in your insurance not paying for the visit and you paying for the bills.
I rarely write reviews, but I think it’s important to give credit where it’s due and spread the word about local businesses when you consistently receive “above and beyond” service - and that has certainly been my experience as a patient of Avalon Family Care for the last couple of years.
Of note, the entire practice is consistently efficient, friendly, and professional from the front staff to the nurses to the PA and doctor. I actually look forwarded to being greeted so warmly when I have appointments and they always remember me even when it’s been months between appointments.
As nice as that is though, I wouldn’t keep coming back if the medical care itself was not top notch - BUT IT IS! I simply can’t say enough good things about the PA, Mayson Giffel, in particular. She strikes a perfect balance between treating her patients with the utmost professionalism and care while never losing sight of the fact that every patient is a human being first and foremost. This is why I think she was the first medical professional in a long line that found a treatment plan that has ultimately improved my quality of life. Mayson takes the time to ACTIVELY LISTEN to your concerns and ask thoughtful follow-up questions and then digs in with curiosity and determination. That makes her a medical “unicorn” in my book!
Lastly, here’s something I never thought I’d say; I had a very positive experience with an insurance situation! Without any prompting or pleading on my part, Avalon proactively submitted an appeal to my insurance THREE TIMES for a much needed medicine. I would imagine that dealing with insurance companies can often feel like a thankless job, but I just want to say for the record how grateful I am that they didn’t give up on getting me the help I needed.
So if you are looking for quality medical care, I highly recommend Avalon!
Wonderful Doctor and Staff!
The care I have received from Dr. Finnila and his staff has been so very compassionate and caring - from the sweet receptionist who knows you by name when you walk thru the door, to his nurse practitioner who has been a huge source of comfort and care. Thank you all!!
The doctor is awesome. He has excellent bed side manner. The patient portal is also an excellent tool for staying in contact with them. I highly recommend this office.
