Works as advertised (if in a cellular network area)
I chose Solid GPS over its competition because I wanted a standalone unit with good battery life that I could hide anywhere in our campervan. I wanted something that continues to send position updates INDEPENDENTLY of the vehicle's electrics, for an extended period (Thieves can disconnect or otherwise tamper with hard-wired GPS trackers. For example, disconnect the battery leads on a stolen vehicle being transported on the back of a truck).
I loaned our brand new campervan to my son in Newcastle with the Solid GPS unit installed. I returned to Armidale NSW and was able to monitor the location of the campervan with the app. I set up three watchdog boundaries: one for my son's home in Newcastle; one for another son's home near Armidale; and one for my home in Port Macquarie.
When my son in Newcastle took the campervan for a weekend trip, I tracked its location in the Hunter Valley. I received alerts, via the app, when the campervan exited and returned to the watchdog boundary in Newcastle.
There was a minor GPS tracking issue. The tracker stopped sending position updates near Greta, NSW, when the campervan diverted from the highway to Camp on Hunter at Elderslie, 8.5km in a straight line from Greta (see attached map). I received no further GPS tracking information on the app until 2 days later, when the campervan returned to the highway at Greta. Obviously, the tracker was in a poor reception area at Camp on Hunter. HOWEVER, my son continued to send and receive messages and photos while at Camp on Hunter, using his mobile phone connected to the same Telstra network as the Solid GPS tracker. Admittedly, he had to move around the campground to get reception. He said that there wasn't much reception where the campervan was parked.
Overall, though, I think the Solid GPS device performs as advertised, and it gives me peace of mind that our campervan can be tracked if stolen and in a mobile reception area. The Solid GPS tracker is only one layer of security for our campervan. We also have a steering wheel lock (high-visibility theft deterrent) and warning stickers on the windows. We will also fit a CANbus immobiliser to protect our high-value asset.
If a thief breaks into our campervan, some physical damage will be caused (e.g. smashed window). We use the high-visibility theft deterrent (steering wheel lock) in the hope that a thief won't bother trying to break in. However, if the thief is determined, it's reassuring to know that we have the other levels of security, including Solid GPS tracker, to fall back on.
I recommend the Solid GPS tracker.
NOTE: Not the 'Boundary Alert' screenshots attached do not refer to the same trip as described in this review. I include them for reviewers to better understand how the Solid GPS app works.
