Owners carry the risk while Quirky protects guests
I do not recommend anyone to hire their vehicle on QC. I have listed campervans with Quirky Campers and my experience as an owner has been extremely stressful.
The platform markets itself as supporting both guests and owners, but in reality when things go wrong the burden falls entirely on the owner.
Over time I have dealt with multiple serious issues caused by guests, including:
• Vans returned damaged
• Toilets returned full and vans left in unacceptable condition
• Fuel not paid for at petrol stations, resulting in debt collectors contacting me
• Parking tickets and speeding fines issued in my name
• Items lost, broken or taken from the vans
• Guests disputing damage they clearly caused
In nearly every case guests simply refuse to pay and the owner is left trying to recover costs while also dealing with insurance claims, garages, fines and administration. Every time this happened QC takes the side of the guest as they are worried about their reviews.
The process is exhausting and owners are expected to carry a huge amount of risk despite Quirky taking high commission on every booking.
After multiple incidents like this, I no longer feel that the platform adequately protects the people actually providing the vehicles.
Prospective owners should be aware that when problems occur, the level of support may not match what is expected.
