The mentor who helped me realize my potential
From 1994 to 2000, I had the privilege of working with István Juhász. Initially, he was my direct supervisor, and even as he advanced into higher management roles, we maintained regular contact. Over those years, we spoke often, and he naturally stepped into the role of a mentor to me.
István supported me in many areas, including personal development, self-awareness, building self-confidence, and navigating both professional and personal challenges. He never provided simple answers. Instead, he shared relevant experiences from his own career and life, challenged my thinking, and encouraged me to find my own solutions.
His guidance had a significant impact on how I approach work and life. His advice on public speaking, time management, negotiation, goal setting, customer relationships, and professional behavior has stayed with me throughout my entire career. Let me give two examples.
During these years, I worked as an adult trainer for various government offices and private companies. One of István's earliest pieces of advice was to develop ten times more competence in a topic than what was required for the presentation. This approach fundamentally boosted my confidence in public speaking, a skill that has continuously served me well in many situations throughout my career, especially in management positions.
One of the most important lessons I learned from him was the importance of setting ambitious, challenging goals. He encouraged me to define bold personal and professional goals which almost always leads to significantly greater outcomes. This philosophy truly works, and I attribute many of my most successful career advancements directly to this mindset.
Even after more than twenty-five years, I continue to benefit from the lessons, advice, and perspective that I received from him. I can honestly say that his mentorship had a lasting positive impact on both my professional career and my personal development, and I remain grateful for his guidance and support.
