Mentoring that inspires lasting growth
I worked with István between 2001 and 2006, when he was our Sales Manager and I was a salesperson. Although he was formally my manager, our relationship was much closer to mentoring. We had weekly one-on-one conversations, and whenever I had a question or found myself stuck, his door was always open.
One of István’s greatest strengths as a mentor was that he rarely gave ready-made solutions. Instead, he encouraged independent thinking, provided honest feedback, motivated me, and deliberately gave me assignments that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. At the time, these challenges were often frustrating, but looking back, I can clearly see that they were instrumental in my development.
I came from a technical background as a project manager and software developer, so sales initially felt uncomfortable to me. István helped me understand that professional sales is not about pushing products or convincing people at any cost. He taught me to be confident in representing both our company and my own professional expertise. I didn’t need to play a role or pretend to be someone else—I simply needed to authentically represent the value we could provide.
The development I achieved through István’s mentoring eventually led to my appointment as Sales Manager when he became the CEO.
Our conversations were often demanding because he consistently challenged both my thinking and my personal boundaries. While those discussions could be uncomfortable at the time, they ultimately became some of the most valuable learning experiences of my career.
Perhaps the most important lesson I took away from István’s mentoring was that we are all capable of much more than we initially believe. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my professional career.
