The Mentor I have known István for more than twenty years, and we worked together for nearly a decade. Initially, he was my manager, but over time our relationship evolved into that of mentor and mentee. I can confidently say that the foundations of the leadership skills I possess today were built through his guidance. He is one of the very few people I continue to look up to professionally, and he has played a significant role in shaping me into the leader I am today. Over the years, the mutual trust we developed, our regular conversations, and the countless leadership situations we discussed and analysed together all contributed greatly to my professional growth. At the beginning of our mentoring journey, he shared practical advice and insights based on his own experience. By combining his guidance with my own ideas and approach, I was able to apply what I learned in my daily work. As a result, I gradually became a more confident, self-aware, and effective leader. From the very beginning, I learned that every meeting with him required thorough preparation. He always came exceptionally well prepared himself and expected the same level of commitment from me. There was no room for being unprepared or relying on half-hearted solutions. I found this highly motivating, as it encouraged me to approach every discussion with the same level of professionalism and dedication. Whenever I had a question, I always received an honest answer. Whenever I faced a challenge, he helped me see the situation from different perspectives, offered guidance, or asked thought-provoking questions that ultimately led me to discover my own solution. That is what made his mentoring truly valuable to me: he did not provide ready-made answers but supported me in developing the ability to think independently and grow on my own. It is often said that in some mentoring programmes, mentors tend to impose their own views and solutions on their mentees. My experience with István was exactly the opposite. He always made a genuine effort to understand my goals, identify the areas where he could provide meaningful support, and ensure that our mentoring conversations remained focused on my personal and professional development. For me, a mentor is far more than an experienced leader or trusted advisor. A true mentor inspires others, challenges their thinking through thoughtful questions, supports their development, and, above all, respects the mentee's own journey, aspirations, and decisions. Working with István over so many years embodied exactly what mentoring should be. In my view, a leader becomes a true mentor when they recognise how they can best support another person's development and use their experience not to promote their own ideas, but to help the mentee achieve their own goals. I am deeply grateful for the knowledge, trust, encouragement, and unwavering support I received from him throughout this journey.
