A Mentorship that Shaped a Career
Istvan was my mentor for nine years at Verizon, and I can say without hesitation that he is one of the most significant influences on who I am today, both professionally and personally.
What made Istvan exceptional wasn’t technical expertise. He is, at his core, a people manager - and a masterful one. He understood that developing a person goes far beyond teaching skills. As my mentor, he committed to our relationship with consistency and intention: we had regular weekly one-on-ones throughout the years, dedicated time where I could bring professional challenges, personal difficulties, or simply think out loud. Those conversations always felt like a safe space. Istvan is genuinely open-minded and deeply curious. He listened with real patience, and there were moments where he didn’t ask a single question. He simply sat in silence and waited, giving me the room to find my own words and share what I needed to share. He was always present, and always provided feedback that was genuinely valuable, not generic, not dismissive. We also ran periodic surveys to track my progression, both in specific areas and overall, which gave our work together a structure and allowed us to see real growth over time.
One of Istvan’s greatest strengths as a mentor was his use of real-life stories. He didn’t just share knowledge, he shared experience. There’s a fundamental difference between a mentor who knows the theory and one who has lived through the situations they’re describing. Istvan always led with the latter. As his mentee, learning from his actual experiences made the lessons stick in a way that abstract advice never could.
Under his guidance, I learned courage, patience, self-belief, and perhaps most valuably, a healthy relationship with failure. Istvan never treated failure as a disaster. He treated it as data, something to learn from and move forward with. That reframing changed how I work and how I lead my own teams today.
The most tangible example of his mentorship: he took me from a tech support role and helped me build a team from scratch, then lead it. That career trajectory didn’t happen because I was ready and confident, but because Istvan believed I was ready before I did. That distinction matters enormously. It’s easy to support someone who already believes in themselves. It takes a different kind of mentor to invest trust in someone who hasn’t found that trust in themselves yet.
And then he did something even harder: he let go. When he judged the time was right, he gave me the freedom to operate independently, to make my own decisions, to fail and recover on my own terms. I wasn’t sure I was ready. He was. That act of deliberate, well-timed release - trusting me to fly before I trusted myself - is one of the most impactful things any mentor has ever done for me.
Nine years is a long time, and across all of it, one thing remained constant: he believed in me. In complicated moments, in uncertain situations, that belief was an anchor. It shaped my confidence, my resilience, and ultimately the kind of leader I’ve become.
