After making a non-refundable payment I was forced to go through an identity verification process involving sharing my passport and taking a photo of myself, providing them with valuable personal data. Then I either had to buy damage waiver insurance or pay them £5 to let them authorise a £250 deposit. I have been a booking.com member for over 10 years, that should demonstrate my trustworthiness. As a minor point, despite constant messages and texts badgering me to do the identification process they ignored my request to check-in an hour early, and the postcode of the property did not exist.
