From manager to mentor
I had the privilege of being mentored by István during the years we worked together at Verizon, where he was my manager and mentor. What started as a normal working relationship quickly grew into a long-term mentoring: we had one-on-one sessions every week, consistently and over a long period, and he took real ownership of my development both professionally and personally.
Our conversations focused mostly on people and stakeholder management, both internal and external. Handling suppliers, partner companies, and internal IT were the biggest areas where, as an IT administrator and procurement specialist, I ran into plenty of tricky, real-world situations. István rarely just handed me the answer; instead, he guided me with questions, helping me reach my own solutions rather than simply providing a ready answer. He also helped me to believe I am more capable than I thought. He also shared a lot of his own experience along the way, and I learned a lot from these.
What I valued most was how he pushed me (always in a constructive way) a little outside my comfort zone. I came out of that period noticeably stronger, both in my soft skills and professionally. I always left our sessions motivated, learned the basics of management and I'm genuinely grateful for the effort he put into me.
